My professional life is driven by a passion for understanding and working with complex systems. From the design of specific application logic and microservice boundaries, to the development of cloud infrastructure and deployment patterns, what I find most fulfilling is working with complex and distributed systems to simplify scaling, visibility, and retryability to support enterprise-level resilience and reliability of software systems. Building teams, working with team leads and architects, and developing mentorship patterns and working to hire, retain, and give paths for growth for talented developers is part and parcel with the more technical aspects of the work, and I find it both necessary and fulfilling to grapple with the human side of the socio-technical landscape every bit as much as the software.This work requires technical leadership, being willing and able to take the best ideas from all parties involved, and move toward actionable solutions, without allowing the quality of the work - or the quality of working life for those doing the work - to suffer. This work also necessitates a commitment to working with business and organizational stakeholders, subject matter experts, and decision makers to ensure alignment on deliverables and timelines. At the technical level, I have significant experience in AWS DevOps, in the development of CI/CD pipelines and Kubernetes deployment architecture, and I have written and maintained dozens of microservices and fully-featured applications in Ruby, PHP, Python, JavaScript and TypeScript, and Rust. I have worked as a technical lead and as a manager to introduce Behavior Driven Development and Domain Driven Design patterns to my teams, and have spent time mentoring junior and mid-career developers both in specific languages and frameworks, but also in these larger software development concepts and patterns. I have been a team lead for in-house and distributed teams, and currently work as the Director of Software Engineering for Fracture. I also have two Masters degrees, studying traditional medicine and anthropology.
