Dr. Crowe is a viral immunologist and board-certified pediatric infectious diseases specialist. A handful of vaccine candidates and monoclonal antibodies that he has developed in his academic lab are in clinical trials or late preclinical development with commercial partners. He also founded an antibody discovery company, IDBiologics, in September 2017.He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 1995. His laboratory has a broad portfolio of work in the area of microbial pathogenesis and immunity, with an aim to discovery of mechanisms important to development of new vaccines. The laboratory has ongoing work with Ebola, Marburg, Zika, chikungunya, HIV, dengue viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza viruses, human metapneumovirus, rotavirus, novel coronaviruses, norovirus and rotavirus, poxviruses, hepatitis C, rhinovirus and enterovirus, Staph aureus and others. The laboratory has significant commitments in the area of biodefense research. He was the recipient of investigator awards from the March of Dimes, American Society for Microbiology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and Society for Pediatric Research. He was the awarded the 2002 Judson Daland Prize of the Amer. Philosophical Society, the 2005 Oswald Avery Award of the Inf. Dis. Soc. of America, and the 2006 E. Mead Johnson Award for Excellence in Pediatrics, the 2007 Outstanding Investigator Award, Amer. Federation for Med. Res., the 2010 Norman J. Siegel New Member Outstanding Science Award, American Pediatric Society, the 2017 Samuel Rosenthal Prize for Excellence in Academic Pediatrics and the 2017 Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award (ASCI).
