After 18 months working with Mahogany Bay, restoring wooden boats, I have decided to work on my own boat.I am extending my father's dream of keeping "Volante", and 1887 sandbagger sailboat. in 1964, dad and his friend Moki Lizee acquired Volante from the Burton family and spend seven years getting her back sailing. After dad and then Moki died, the boat sat at Moki's son's house for 15 years. The MacRae family asked to have Volante so we could restore her in memory of our dads.I am just beginning the task with my wife Julie and my siblings. The first step is to make new white oak ribs. The original 2" x 3" white oak ribs are completely rotted away below the waterline. I will steam new white oak ribs and sister them to the originals. The hull remains 90% original cypress, but now the planks below the waterline need to be replaced.
