Learned fundamental principles of the marine microbial ecosystem through hands-on scientific research that included laboratory research at SIO and field research in the California Bight and the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Nice, France, working on the MEDEA Project to study the dynamics of the marine microbial food web and general marine microbial ecology.Learned and performed PCR techniques, which were relative new at the time, to identify microbial populations in the local waters off Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Mission Bay. Performed general lab duties. Learned sterile technique and methods to maintain and study microbial cultures, including fluorescence microscopy, Northern and Western Blotting, 3H-thymidine incorporation for bacterial enumeration. Performed radioactive experiments in a shipping container aboard the Research Vessel Gordon Sproul while out at sea.
