I work with the world's best news design team as the head of what we call PreDesign. This involves really understanding a client's product, its users, its staff and capabilities before we start looking at how to design interactions. My ongoing role is to represent the client and the client's audience at every stage of the design process, even when our client isn't actually in the room. I ground our design teams in the user insights we have made in the discovery process.

  • Audionewspaper Inc
    Founder
    Audionewspaper Inc Oct 2007 - Sep 2010
Project I pursued at Stanford. The idea is to produce original short aggregated news stories and streaming them to your phone. The app learns your news tastes from your behaviour and adapts the story order as it streams to you. The ultimate aim is to build a new audio news ecosystem in which consumers will pay for niche channels to be added to a core free service.

    Stanford, Ca, Us

  • Guardian News & Media
    Managing Editor, The Observer
    Guardian News & Media 1999 - 2006
    London, Gb
I was responsible for the strategy of the paper, editorial and commercial. I took over with the paper haemorrhaging cash and readers and ended up leading a team that increased readership by 100k, launched new print and digital products every year and reduced $20m annual losses to breakeven.
  • The Guardian
    Sports News Reporter
    The Guardian Jul 1994 - Sep 1998
    London, Gb
I covered drugs, hooligans, scandals and anything that happened on the periphery of sport that made it on to the inside pages. I learned how to remain invisible in the middle of a riot, how to clean tear gas out of clothes, how to charm people who didn't really see the point in talking to you. I had a great time, but it's no life for a grown-up...
  • When Saturday Comes Magazine
    Publisher
When Saturday Comes Magazine Jun 1988 - Jun 1992
    London , London, Gb
I joined WSC from college and was fortunate to work with a brilliant editor Andy Lyons to take the magazine from a circulation of about 2,500 to around the 35,000 mark. Andy decided what went in the magazine, my job was to keep us going with pitiful financial resources, pay bills, delay bills, create stunts that got us free publicity, promote the magazine to an external audience, fill envelopes, everything.WSC was a fantastic training ground. We were built on user generated content before anyone even knew what that was. We sold the magazine outside football stadia in order to pay our own salaries. We published fantastic annuals and organized football trips abroad. We built an reputable brand from nothing with no money. WSC played a small but vital role in helping football in England come back from the brink of bankruptcy and failure after Heysel and Hillsborough to become the most popular league in Europe.
