My experience at Air France, American Airlines, Northwest Airlines, WMATA and Levee Communications has also made me an SME in brand strategy, media relations, employee communications/engagement, promotions/sponsorships, media training, executive communications, special events, social media and social responsibility.It's the people, peopleI've worked with countless talented people over the years. We worked 24/7 during a pilot’s strike, responded to an operations meltdown during a snowstorm and took measles vaccines to Africa with the American Red Cross. Improv reminds me that engaging scenes require the support of all performers. Bolivia, Budapest, BeyondI took off two years to travel around the world while consulting for a LGBT marketing firm. I would arrive home from the Bolivian Andes, write copy for a client’s website then pack for Budapest. I've also performed stand-up comedy, performed off-off Broadway and made appearances on “Reno 9-1-1,” the TrueTV network and the “Frost/Nixon” movie. You only live once!

We gained great publicity in cities around the country when we announced new service. We launched some cool employee engagement programs called “Team Frontier” and “Winning.” I worked with some talented colleagues as we tried to improve our crisis response plans, organize company-wide town hall meetings and make our digital employee communications more engaging - all while the company was in negotiations with its two largest unions. We pulled together in the summer and fall of 2016 when we were short-staffed at the Denver airport. We uploaded and downloaded customer’s luggage from Airbus A320 family aircraft, and I’ve got the empty bottles of Advil to prove it. Working on the ramp, I also developed a greater appreciation for front-line employees and the hard work they do every day. I became a better advocate so that the voices of these hard-working professionals could be heard throughout the company. -

I was hired by the Taproot Foundation as an account director to hire and lead a team to develop a brand strategy for LA-based City Help. This work introduced me to the low income housing communities of South Central LA, where I became a stronger advocate for the poor. Some of my other clients and I did some creative work. For example, to introduce New Zealand Natural Ice Cream to the Southern California market, we got a bunch of folks to hand out free samples of the ice cream to striking Writers Guild members. We developed the first LGBT microsite for LAN Airlines and launched their campaign at San Francisco Pride. I also partnered with the newly launched East Sider LA as a writer. One of my favorite stories featured the seriousness of comedy – especially as I performed stand-up at open mic nights around LA.

In response, we decided to partner with the American Red Cross during that period to provide $70,000 worth of transportation for volunteers traveling to Africa delivering measles vaccinations to nearly 245,000 children. We also got creative in putting Air France in places where you wouldn’t expect to see it – the German Chamber of Commerce and Italian and Belgian tourism groups. We created these sponsorships to promote connections through the Paris hub. On the internal comms side, we re-launched our U.S. employee intra-net, preceded with print and on-line promotion, with a 50 percent increase in page views within the first week. -

I learned servant leadership from one of my bosses. I also learned that titles don’t matter in a crisis when everyone is pulling together. In this role, I worked with great creative and media agencies to build awareness in Northwest’s hub cities. The airline was often criticized for having high fares so we developed a year-long print, broadcast and on-line campaign called “Hub Value,” highlighting our scope of service. For example, because customers live in a hub, they get non-stops to places like Tokyo, Amsterdam and London. We even got civic and business leaders on board as testifiers for this campaign. -

I oversaw the inaugurals of multiple international route launches such as Detroit-Beijing (the first non-stop from the United States to Beijing), Memphis-Amsterdam (with an Elvis decal on the fuselage) and Minneapolis-Osaka (have you ever tried to break open a sake barrel?), just to name a few. I also saw first-hand what it meant to be part of a crisis go-team as I was dispatched to Northern Minnesota for the crash of a Northwest Airlink 19-seat jet prop – another life-changing experience.
