About James Diewald
James Diewald is an Associate Principal and a design leader in SOM’s Los Angeles studio. Over the course of more than fifteen years of professional practice, James has refined a design approach that brings the potential of each project into focus through collaboration and a deep reading of cultural context. In his work on projects in Los Angeles and across the globe, he has advocated for ideas to make the cities of the future more livable, equitable, and sustainable through design.James’ experience on large-scale projects at the intersection between architecture and urban design brings together critical thinking about public space and landscape with expertise in the mechanics of building organization and the demands of development. His work on objects and spaces foregrounds user experiences and the cultural significance of materials and forms.James holds a Masters of Architecture from UCLA, where he received the Henry Adams Medal, and a Bachelor of Arts in architecture from Miami University, where he received the Alpha Rho Chi Medal. As a lecturer at USC (2015-2020), James led undergraduate design studios addressing topics of domestic space, urbanism and representation. Before joining the faculty at USC, James taught at Auburn University and UCLA. His academic work has been published and exhibited at national and international events including the ACADIA Conference, the Beyond Media Exhibition in Florence and the Venice Biennale.James has lived and worked professionally in the United States, Germany, and Austria. Prior to joining SOM, James has worked with Querkraft (Vienna), Murmur (LA), Kevin Daly Architects (LA) and Behnisch (Stuttgart).
