A software house developing mail order and distribution software. John's role as system analyst and later as senior analyst included significant contributions to the standard Mailbrain package including refactoring the core modules, conversion of the package from Pick to Unidata and implementing a proper release strategy. John completed a module to charge credit cards electronically by interfacing to a credit card terminal and implemented that solution at multiple clients. He was also the lead analyst for a number of clients including M&M sports (now M&M direct), Thompson and Morgan and The Book People.

A software house specialising in Fleet Management software which was developed for the Pick operating system / multi-value database. Clients included ambulance services, local government and the RAF. John joined as a trainee programmer and was initially part of the team developing the standard application. Subsequently he developed bespoke modifications for specific clients and provided pre-sales support. In 1989 he completed a project to install, configure and train users on their Fleetplan system for Shell in Nigeria.
