Platoon Serjeant (or Sergeant) is a senior role of responsibility, promotion to which usually takes place after 12 years depending on ability and successful completion of the Platoon Sergeants Battle Course. Serjeants typically share command of a troop or platoon of up to 35 soldiers, with the important responsibility for advising and assisting Junior Officers.This is the first level at which the term Senior NCO properly applies. The platoon serjeant is rightfully expected to bring that experience to bear in quick, accurate decisions that are in the best interest of the mission and the soldier.The platoon serjeant is expected to embody all the traits of a leader, trainer, man-manager, role model, facilitator and pastoral support manager.

Infantry Training Centre (Itc) Catterick

The Infantry Training Centre Catterick (ITC Catterick) trains all the Army’s Infantrymen, producing some of the best infantry soldiers in the world. It is the primary training location for all recruits who want to join the infantry and is where the Combat Infantryman's Course (CIC) is conducted. The CIC combines Phase 1 and Phase 2 infantry training, it is the standard framework course on which all infantry training in the British Army is based. The standard course lasts 26 weeks, in which the basics of infantry soldiering are taught;Personal administration, Weapons training, Drill, Fieldcraft, Fitness and Teamwork.

The Corporal is the second rung of the NCO ranks, serving as leader of the Army 'Section' typically 8 Riflemen, principally; teams leaders. This takes place typically between 6-8 years depending on ability to lead, performance and completion of the Section Commanders Battle Course.In this rank additional trade and instructor qualifications can be gained in a large range of weapon handling & deployment skills, range safety and tactics qualifications. Corporals are known thoughout the British Army as the 'backbone' of the Army. Corporals are responsible for the individual training, personal appearance and cleanliness of their soldiers.

Promotion to Lance Corporal may follow after about 3 years as a Rifleman (Private) and successful completion of a Junior Non Commissioned Officer course. Lance Corporals are required to command a small team of up to four soldiers called a Fire Team and tasks include the supervising and administration of a team of eight known as a 'Section'. They also have opportunities to specialise and undertake specialist military training such as range safety, weapon handling and battle lesson qualifications.
