Founder of a consultancy offering clients energy, business development, and workforce development services. Managed launch of a new applied research center focused on new technologies for modernizing the power grid. Developed grant proposals and assured compliance with funders’ performance requirements. Managed $3 million budget and performed monitoring and reporting of expenditures, deliverables, and research outcomes. Coordinated with faculty researchers and consultants to complete work on time and within budget. Guided external affairs.

Led a nonprofit business development organization that accelerates growth and development of technology companies and industry. Managed all operations (e.g., budgeting, reporting to the board, implementing programs, staffing, fundraising, conducting events, media relations, website and corporate communications). Substantially grew programs (CleanStart, MedStart, VentureStart) and maintained budget, staffing, and sponsorships in spite of deep recession. Established SMUD as a key player in Sacramento Region’s collaborative economic development effort that successfully created or retained over 25,000 jobs in the Sacramento area. Created and implemented the program to promote economic development in the Sacramento area. Program elements included corporate recruiting, business retention and expansion, small business assistance, loan programs, and entrepreneurial assistance. Engaged with commercial and industrial customers to identify their business needs and proposed utility solutions to resolve them. Leveraged resources by working closely with local, regional, and state economic developers to promote Sacramento via marketing, public relations, sales, planning and development, and entrepreneurial assistance. Supervised staff and advised board members and management. Additional SMUD Experience: • Supervisor, Government Affairs & Local Government Affairs Representative - Led SMUD’s direct advocacy efforts before federal, state and local government officials, and business and community leaders on many sensitive issues. Served as credible spokesperson for SMUD. Advised board and management on public policy matters and communication strategies. • Senior Energy Analyst - Established SMUD as an early leader in solar and energy efficiency programs. Developed and managed the Passive Solar Design Assistance, Building Load Reduction, and Solar Water Heating Programs. Advised builders, architects, business managers and government officials on energy efficiency, solar, and building design methods.
