As a teacher, I have developed a number of skills that are transferable to many fields. On a daily basis, I create and give presentations, and interact with students (individually and in groups) both verbally and in writing. I am an effective communicator with a vast range of audiences and using various software programs and technologies. Having read tens of thousands of student documents, I am proficient in proofreading and editing and am adept at assessing learning mastery. In order to create an inclusive and engaging environment, I have cultivated my active-listening techniques, which has in turn, made me a successful problem solver. Teaching has required that I meet nearly constant deadlines, which necessitates strong skills in organization and attention to minutia. I am an outstanding planner as creating course syllabi, juggling multiple classes with different types of students. Planning, and teaching in general, also demands that I can expertly locate reliable and accurate information. However, even the best laid plans can be laid to waste, and as teaching is a dynamic field, I have learned to be flexible and adaptable, to have back up plans, and be open to creating new plans. I am constitutionally a curious person, and enjoy the constant learning that my occupation necessitates. Teaching is always a supervisory role; an instructor must motivate and monitor student achievement. My supervisory abilities have also been honed through overseeing several teaching assistants and student honors projects. While my expertise has been acquired through teaching experience, it is a skill set that has applicability to a broad range of careers.
