Master Thesis of the master Sustainable Energy Technology at Eindhoven University of TechnologyI succeeded my Master Thesis at the Heat Storage Technology group of prof. dr. H.A. Zondag. During the work I did as a preparation for this thesis, I studied the possibilities (technical and economic) to temporary store energy at high temperatures at Tata Steel IJmuiden. During the project I was supervised by dr. ir. Pepijn Pronk (R&D Knowledge Group Leader ‘Thermal Processes at Tata Steel) and dr. ir. Camilo Rindt (Associate Professor Energy Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology). I focussed on an application where Tata Steel could temporary store the energy that is now flared, and use it at a later moment to produce high pressure steam. The system I designed has a storage capacity of 1000 GJ, (comparable with the total gasholder capacity of 105 m3 in IJmuiden), however with a very small volume! (±2% of the gasholder).In this energy storage system, the energy is stored thermally. By the use of a steam network, residual process gas is used to create superheated steam. A storage system containing two ‘molten salt’ storage systems and a Phase Change Material is used to store the energy that is delivered by the steam. Using a simulation model in Matlab, the amount of energy that can be saved is, predicted.

One of my tasks was to solve thruster problems for seaworthy ships that had mechanical, hydraulic, electronic or control problems. These jobs included overhauls of controllable pitch propellers, azimuth thrusters and bow-thrusters. Furthermore, I was responsible for inspection and testing of the installation of thrust installations (mechanical, hydraulic, electronic and controls) in new ships.
