Profile bio

About Jean-Eric Van Der Elst

I graduated with my Master of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University. During my MSc degree I worked part-time for a collaboration project between NUAIR and Windshape as a Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineer Intern. I was challenged with innovatively simulating a newly designed open-loop wind-tunnel concept that will be able to produce a multitude of flow conditions such as gusts of wind, shedding vortices and turbulent shear flows. I was also a fluid dynamics research assistant working to understand how UAV PID controllers react when introduced into a boundary layer shear flow environment. My engineering experience over the years includes computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), fluid dynamic data analysis, Integration, Verification, Validation, and Qualification (IVVQ / Systems) Engineering, and project design and management regarding the implementation of research tools. I enjoy generating new ideas and devising feasible solutions to broadly relevant problems. My colleagues would describe me as a hard-working, resourceful individual who maintains a positive and proactive attitude when faced with adversity. I am currently seeking job opportunities that will allow me to develop and optimize aerodynamic and structural designs. Specific fields of interest include computational fluid dynamics, experimental aerodynamics, and structural stress analysis.

Listed skills include Leadership, Matlab, C++, Ptc Creo, and 12 others.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineer Intern

Syracuse, New York, Us

I joined a NUAIR and WindShape collaboration project as a Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineering Intern. I utilized ANSYS Fluent to analyze and modify a wind-tunnel concept specifically designed to test autonomous UAVs in a multitude of flow conditions such as gusts of wind and turbulent shear flow. The challenge being, to precisely replicate urban atmospheric weather conditions that a UAV might experience. I identified and investigated upstream inlet conditions (such as Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) Turbulent models) that will produce the desired downstream effects for UAVs to encounter. Using the predicted model’s data, I was able to analyze the TKE vortex generation components and mitigate the occurrence of vortices that affect the flow regime. Regarding the software aspect of the project, utilizing Python I designed and coded a master script for a hardware in the loop (HIL) control system which functions as a systematic and repeatable approach for characterizing UAS response to weather.

Nov 2019 - Dec 2020

Fluid Dynamics Research Assistant

Syracuse, New York, Us

I formed part of an innovative UAV research team at Syracuse University that analyzes the performance of UAV PID controllers in various turbulent shear flow conditions. I utilized MATLAB and Python to conduct data analysis on gathered UAV PID controller experimental data. I specialized in setting up the required shear flow conditions (using grids upstream to disrupt the flow) as well as the measuring tools used in collecting data (hot wire measurements and pitot tubes). The Skytop Lab team also researches the far-field acoustic performance of rectangular jet nozzles at supersonic conditions. I assisted in analyzing the effects of the 3rd stream mixing shear layer and analyzing how the phenomenon affects the compression of shocks and consequently the acoustic frequency further downstream.

Integration, Verification And Validation Test Engineer Intern

Meudon, Île-De-France, Fr

During my time at Thales, I was tasked with debugging the Thales Next Generation Inflight Entertainment and Connectivity (IFEC) System. I was tasked with operating the System Integrated Labs (SIL's) and testing the updated versions of the Global Connectivity Portal (GCP) utilizing Linux and Python scripts. I validated the functionality of the Inflight Entertainment Connectivity (IFEC) through test cases, ensuring all system-level requirements were met. I also performed data analysis on media packages utilizing Wireshark. I diligently applied root cause analysis approaches to identify issues related to the Inflight Entertainment and Connectivity (IFEC) System. I also implemented corrective actions to solve, correct, prevent, and improve the IFEC System via Linux and Python scripts. This required writing python parser scripts to insure precise configuration of SILs.

Resident Assistant

Melbourne, Florida, Us

Supervised and personally mentored 48 students per year. I RA'd in a freshman dorm area for 2 years and an upperclassman area for one year. During such time I helped international students adapt to an independent university lifestyle by providing counselling and creating group activities for them to interact in and foster friendships.Created programs and activities with the goal of meeting residents needs and fostering a supportive family environment. Performed semester check-ins, check-outs and health inspections in which I cataloged and reviewed dorm living conditions and potentially hazardous appliances.Planned and executed major campus events such as Florida Resident Assistant Seminar (FRAS), Casino Night and Treat or Treat. Collaborated with local businesses to host expos. Managed the planning and project management fostering improved business community relationships with FIT

Aug 2014 - May 2018

Maintenance Engineer Intern

Madrid, Community Of Madrid, Es

In the summer of 2017, I interned in the Maintenance Department of SwiftAir in Madrid, Spain. My role consisted of diligently co-supervising a C-Check of an Embraer 120 Brasilia. While working for SwiftAir, I used my knowledge in structural analysis, fracture mechanics, and mechanics of materials to identify compromised Structurally Significant Items (SSI) components. I also supervised and assisted the mechanics, and in the process, I learned how to solve structural issues such as stress fractures, fatigue, and corrosion. I produced DFMEA’s for potential structural failures of the Embraer 120 Brasilia which allowed me to assist in the cyclic stress fatigue analysis and repair of the Embraer right engine frame. In addition, I diligently cataloged and reviewed all Repair Report Cards of the Embraer 120 Brasilia. I performed preflight checklists with the mechanics to validate the repaired components of the Embraer 120 Brasilia.
