Current“Past battlefields”, in Danish: Fortidens slagmarker, unfolds the compelling and fascinating history of war and strife from the Stone Age through to the Vikings. Winner of the Blixen Award 2015.Based on archaeological finds from more than 6500 years, ethnographic parallels and written sources it shows how warfare and conflict was part of human life and the making of kingdoms in prehistory. 6500 years of forgotten history is reconstructed through archaeological traces, and the book tries to provide answers to some of our common history’s major puzzles. The book describes the archaeology of warfare in Denmark, Scandinavia and its surrounding countries (especially England as our prehistory and early history is closely linked) from the Stone Age to the Viking Age. The book is beautifully illustrated with photos and drawings, and based on more than 8000 pages of the newest Danish and international research my ambition has been to write the book in a manner, that will appeal to both experienced scholars and a wider range of readers generally interested in our past – “Past battlefields” contains the up to date knowledge and is at the same time a narrative told in a straight forward language with vivid descriptions of lost worlds and a rich visual universe, which guides the reader through the many splendid weapons and other treasures from the past. The Vikings are well known by most, but the Vikings did not come out of nowhere. Many thousands of years of violence and wars preceded the famous warriors. In the ground below our feet archaeologists have found traces of violent wars and conflicts that rolled over Denmark and Northern Europe several thousand years ago. The history of these wars do not appear in any written sources and in many ways remain great mysteries to us, but the archaeological evidence leaves us with traces of violent events that took place and the possibility of interpreting the remains of the life and events of the prehistoric times.
