About Jean Farup

As a trained exercise physiologist I have been working extensively with physiological and molecular regulation of human skeletal muscle tissue. During my PhD the primary research questions were related to the influence of exercise and amino acid availability on the regulation and functional role of muscle stem cells in healthy human skeletal muscle. During my research residence in Illinois, USA, as a visiting PhD-student I gained knowledge and hands-on-experience with fluorescence activated cell-sorting (FACS) analysis on mice muscle tissue (even though this was not a part of my PhD project). Most recently I have used this knowledge to obtain preliminary data on mesenchymal cell populations from human skeletal muscle. To consolidate my own research area and further develop novel technical and theoretical research skills my post-doctoral research will focus on the pathophysiological regulation of mesenchymal stem cells primarily, but not restricted to, skeletal muscle tissue. To pursue these goals I have initiated collaborations with novel national and international research partners. In cooperation with these I will further develop technical expertise to isolate primary cells from human muscle. Moreover, using state-of-the-art methods I will investigate the pathophysiological culprits driving the dysfunctional regulation of stem cell within skeletal muscle to contribute and expand the knowledge on the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology.
