I designed and conducted research investigating the link between the gut microbiota, metabolome, inflammation and hypertension using in-vivo experimental animal models, flow cytometry, ELISA, tissue histology and western immunoblot techniques. I managed laboratory records, budgeting, data analysis and interpretation and communicated scientific findings through oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. I further mentored and managed 2 students and mediated correspondence of technical outsourcing between my laboratory and external companies. I wrote and awarded grant funding that supported this training. I participated in the planning and oversight of the Council on Hypertension scientific conference by the American Heart Association. I chaired conference sessions at international scientific conferences and served as vice president of the postdoctoral association at Vanderbilt University.

I characterized the gut microbiota in a preclinical model of preeclampsia and tested a novel ketogenic intervention for the treatment of hypertension and kidney disease in rats. This work was presented both through posters and talks at regional and international conferences and published as peer-reviewed manuscripts. I applied for and received $62,000 in funding for an independently-initiated research project through the American Heart Association. I also engaged the community at yearly science fairs for elementary school students
