We successfully delivered multiple releases for $10.6M of the portfolio, with another $10M in releases in flight. Our team was large, multi-organizational and global: about 150 members from the client and two consultancies, with a significant portion of the team overseas. The project involved custom code and configured systems (Pega) for business process automation. We accomplished our goals through sound judgment, critical thinking, and the full array of project management and software/systems development best practices.

Based on primary market data, we created a value-based segmentation model and codified an engagement model, spanning “do it yourself-ers” and those seeking consulting expertise. Positioning tactics followed, with conversion rates exceeding target. We extended the base model to CMMI® SVC, yielding increased pipeline leads. -

The high point of this phase of my SEI career was the formal launch of a new area of research: “Process Improvement in Multi-model Environments.” This coalesced several years of research about harmonizing multiple improvement models (such as Six Sigma, CMMI, ITIL, SOX) to efficiently achieve performance-driven improvement. Through new publications, a well-attended public workshop, and numerous global presentations, we secured “no strings” research funding and rallied global community engagement. Additional highlight: Extending the Assurance Initiative launched in my previous role, colleagues and I developed cross-organization influence maps and a systems dynamic model to characterize overall Assurance supply chain interrelationships. We won Best Paper at the 2009 IEEE Systems Engineering Conference, and galvanized additional research.

Our due diligence covered opportunity definition, initial solution scope, projected internal/external benefits, and a high level multi-year roadmap for investments and deliverables. Our sponsors agreed with our recommendation to invest in Software Assurance and created a new multi-year initiative.

This was the birth of work in “performance driven improvement” and “multi-model improvement” and the beginning of longstanding relationships with many external collaborators. I also held consulting responsibilities. My largest engagement was to guide an Air Force client to achieve CMMI® Level 5 – the first DoD aviation organization to do so!
