I fell backward into business. I spent most of my 20s playing music and avoiding adulthood. Everything began to click when I discovered eBay in 1999. After building a couple of successful businesses in the auction space, I took what I'd learned from growing those businesses with online marketing to start SmallBox in 2006. SmallBox has evolved over the years from a marketing agency into a strategic consultancy that helps mission-driven organizations with branding and design. In 2018, I left SmallBox to join the board management software company Boardable as its full-time CEO. In 2020 Boardable closed its Series A raising $8m to invest in team and product. Boardable currently serves over 2,000 organizations around the world and is growing quickly. In 2023, I left Boardable to join Opendate, a venue management and ticketing solution that was birthed out of the Vogue nightclub in Indianapolis during Covid. I am excited to be working with a great team and product! My personal mission is to create meaningful work for talented people who share my desire to use business as a force for good in this world. Along the way I have been involved as a founder or investor with a number of other businesses and nonprofits including Springboard Marketing, The Speak Easy, Musical Family Tree, Joyful Noise Recordings, Gravy Lab, Boardable, Adproval, Ripley's Auctions, and Brain Twins. I also serve, or have served, on the boards of several Indy-area nonprofits including The Speak Easy, Musical Family Tree, Big Car, United Way of Central Indiana, ProAct and the Indiana Independent Venue Alliance. More on these endeavors along with blogs and links at jebbanner.com (it's a little out of date).I live on the north side of Indianapolis with my wife Jenny and 3 beautiful daughters. In my spare time I play and record music, collect vinyl records, forage mushrooms, and cook as much as possible.

Board ChairProact Indy Sep 2018 - Mar 2021Suite 1370, Indiana, UsI joined the board and quickly filled the board chair seat, helping bring in a new CEO, restructure the board and help get ProAct ready for its second decade of growth. I stepped down in 2021 as my wife, Jenny, joined the board. She had worked separately with ProAct's founder and CEO Derrin Slack. She is now the board chair. I see a pattern forming here... -
CeoSmallbox Jan 2006 - Dec 2017Indianapolis, In, UsI was co-founder and CEO of SmallBox for 12 years. It was a wonderful experience with plenty of twists and turns. We started out as a web development shop, building on my co-founder Joe Downey's technical chops, and quickly found ourselves doing SEO, SEM, branding and facilitation. We went down more than a dozen product rabbit holes before we came across Boardable in 2016. I ran both companies until 2018 when my wife, Jenny, generously took over as CEO and ran SmallBox for a couple years before we found Meg Liffick who is the current CEO and a perfect fit for the role. I returned in 2023 as a consultant. -
Co Founder & Past ChairThe Speak Easy Jan 2012 - Dec 2016Indianapolis, In, UsCo-founder and past chair of the Speak Easy, first co-working space in the state. It started as an idea I ran by co-founder Kristian Anderson. He liked it and looped in Eric Tobias, Andy Clark and Dave Castor. The city, thanks to Michael Huber, helped with some funding and Developer Town helped with the space. It was an exciting and fun season. -
OrganizerWarmfest Entertainment Group Llc Jul 2013 - Dec 2015I worked with Dan Ripley and the other organizers to bring WARM Fest to the Broad Ripple Park in 2013 and 2014. A 3 day, 5 stage event that included performances by Big Head Todd, Of Montreal, Guided By Voices, Michael Franti & Spearhead and many others. It was a stressful but positive experience. -
Co FounderSpringboard Marketing & Web Design Jun 2011 - Dec 2015Indianapolis, In, UsCo-founded Springboard Marketing with Chad Myers in 2011. At SmallBox, we had a lot of leads that were not a good fit for us so we started Springboard to funnel the leads. And it worked well, for a while. -
Founder And OrganizerBroad Ripple Music Fest Jan 2007 - Dec 2010I founded and organized the first Broad Ripple Music Fest eventually handing it off to Dan Fahrner and then Jack Shepler. It eventually merged with WARM Fest in 2013. We had 15-20 stages in the Broad Ripple area going during the Festival. Someone should bring it back.

Adjunct ProfessorFranklin College Aug 2006 - Mar 2009Franklin, In, UsI taught journalism majors how to use software in a class called "Media Technology" aka J101. How I got this gig is a fun story for drinks. -
Vice PresidentRipley Auctions Sep 2001 - Dec 2005Indianapolis, Indiana, UsI co-founded Antique Helper, now Ripley Auctions, with Dan Ripley in 2001. We were the first live and online auction house in the state. We grew quickly to over $3m in revenue in 2005. I was burning out, often working 7 days a week with young kids at home. So I left at the end of 2005 to start SmallBox and to save my marriage, and health. -
Founder And PresidentStuffe Oct 1999 - Jun 2003I founded StuffE with my college roommate and best friend Jason Yoder. We were an eBay consignment business that also purchased collectibles and sold them on eBay. At one point we really had the corner on Saint Clair glass paperweights. The business stated with a purchase of a 10k vinyl collection that contained some of the best records I've ever seen, which also turned me into a record collector. I hired my friends and we built a middling business that eventually served as the foundation for the online operation at Antique Helper/Ripley Auctions. I learned a lot.

Bouncer, Booker, JanitorSecond Story Nightclub Mar 1994 - Aug 1996I worked at Second Story Nightclub in Bloomington while I was a student at Indiana University. I started as a bouncer, working the door, and then began booking shows under the mentorship of club founder and lead booking agent Lee Williams, also founder of Lotus Fest. I also worked as the janitor. I introduced "Dollar Thursdays" to the schedule which highlighted up and coming local bands. I also played Second Story frequently as a musician in my bands the Staple Guns and Special Machine. Sadly, Second Story closed its doors in 2006.
