For the last 30 years, I have taken a wide range of roles in media companies focused on books, magazines and newspapers, radio broadcast, and the web. I have worked as an editor and writer for weekly and monthly periodicals, and as the editor of a large website. Vancouver magazine informs, guides and entertains people who engage with the city. Mixing quality journalism and service-driven pieces, it chronicles and reflects Vancouver's emergence as a dynamic international city. The magazine launched in 1967 and is published 10 times a year. In my seven years, Vancouver magazine has received more National Magazine Award nominations than during any other seven-year stretch. It was honoured as Best Magazine in Western Canada at the Western Magazine Awards in June 2012. Since that time, readership has increased 47% according to the Print Measurement Bureau.We also publish two special interest annual magazines: Eating & Drinking Guide—the ultimate guide to Vancouver's best bars, restaurants and food shops—and Guestlife Vancouver/CityGuide, which tells visitors the best places to see, shop, play, eat, drink and explore.
For this respected city magazine (founded 1967), I oversee the day-to-day running of the editorial department and manage the monthly production cycle. Course description: Students will learn how to develop the “writer’s voice,” to integrate narrative and descriptive writing into stories, and to organize material for magazine-length nonfiction stories. They will develop the skills necessary to rewrite magazine stories and to work with an editor.
Course Description: Over our 13 weeks, we'll attempt to understand how readers and their books come together, and what keeps them apart. Our discussions will cover a number of genres—literary fiction, popular fiction, children's writing, bestselling nonfiction and fiction, niche nonfiction—as well as a look at what we mean by the term "genre" to begin with. We'll put reading and writing into a brief historical context, and look at the yardsticks by which we can measure the success of a book, both within publishing and as measured against other entertainment products such as DVDs, CDs, and feature films.
