As general manager, John was responsible for all aspects of the dealership's operation and marketing on a daily basis. He reported directly to the dealership's owners and Toyota officials. John supervised inventory management, new and used vehicle sales and leasing, vehicle service and parts, pricing and promotion, personnel hiring, training and management, facilities and grounds management, customer relations, communications with local government and media, and Toyota standards compliance. John was also tasked with meeting monthly and annual sales and profit goals, and income and expense forecasting for all dealership departments.

John was responsible for product development, sales and marketing of selected BISSELL homecare products directly to consumers through non-retail outlets (television and direct mail). In this capacity, John conducted product, consumer and marketing research, participated in product design, developed distribution strategies, and coordinated product advertising. As Director of Communications, John managed a $20 million dollar annual advertising budget and coordinated broadcast and print media placement and advertising production for the BISSELL Homecare Division. John's relationship with BISSELL began a few years earlier during a highly successful new product roll-out where television advertising that John wrote and produced helped propel product sales to $100,000,000 in just three years.

John purchased the WKLA AM and FM radio stations in Ludington in 1990. He executed a complete remodel and upgrade of the stations' studios, offices and programming, including the construction of a new transmitter and broadcast tower in 1991. John also focused on training station personnel and developing creative advertising programs to benefit station advertisers. Beyond popular music and entertainment features, the new station programming focused on local news, events and personalities, and a "live" community presence via a new mobile studio broadcast van. John also extended the stations operations to 24 hours, installing and programming one of the nation's first computerized digital radio automation systems. As a result of these efforts and John's community involvement (he became Chamber of Commerce president, a City Council member, and Mayor Pro Tem), WKLA AM and FM were successful and enabled John to also purchase and upgrade WKZC-FM near Ludington, WMTE radio in Mansitee, and WYBR-FM in Big Rapids. John negotiated the sale of the radio stations to an independent investment group in 1998.
