Teaching a course called "Planetary-Scale Data Institutions: Maximizing Access to Environmental Data for the Public Interest" (GLBL 5085). Questions we will explore include: What does the democratization of technology and data access mean for institutions tasked with environmental governance? How do technological limitations, economics, and political systems influence what environmental data we gather, how data are made available, and how data are used to inform decision making? What are strategies to change these constraints? We will also explore how power has been accrued by large technology companies and if we can learn from them to design durable 21st century public interest institutions.

Created and led the global open data program at Amazon Web Services, which researches ways the AWS cloud can make data easier to discover, access, and use. The AWS open data program has democratized access to over 100 petabytes of data, including satellite imagery, climate models, and cancer genomes.- Created the Registry of Open Data on AWS, which makes 10s of petabytes of scientific data openly available on the AWS cloud. Data shared through the Registry of Open Data on AWS has led to publication of over 700 tutorials, publications, tools, and applications by AWS customers.- Hired and managed a team of experts in genomics, Earth science, transportation, and meteorology.- Created new patterns for efficient sharing of satellite imagery that have been adopted by USGS, NASA, Geosciences Australia, Esri, and the Brazilian Space Agency.- Created the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative in collaboration with Amazon’s worldwide sustainability organization, which democratizes access to the data Amazon uses to meet its sustainability goals.- Relocated to Munich from 2017-2020 to create partnerships with the European Space Agency, Group on Earth Observations, and several European meteorological agencies.

Open San Diego makes data about San Diego freely available for anyone to use. Open San Diego successfully gathered a group of San Diegans committed to improving how their city uses data and technology, leading to the implementation of a city open data policy and the hiring of San Diego's first Chief Data Officer.

Created concept, brand identity, and managed all aspects of development, sales, and partnership development of Measured Voice, a social media content management tool for mission-driven organizations.Measured Voice customers included U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of State, Texas.gov, City of San Francisco, Government Accountability Office, Bates College, NOAA, World Wildlife Fund, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.Measured Voice was selected as one of seven out of 235 companies who applied to participate in the first Code for America Accelerator, a startup accelerator dedicated to supporting startups focused on solving public sector challenges.

Lead contract with General Services Administration to develop and manage social media strategies for USA.gov and GobiernoUSA.gov – including audience research, stakeholder research, program development, and training.Created Go.USA.gov and 1.USA.gov URL shorteners. Brokered relationship between Tumblr and the U.S. General Services Administration, enabling use of Tumblr by federal agencies. Created the USA.gov Blog, the first federal government Tumblr blog. Organized first USA.gov Hackathon, a nationwide event to explore 1.USA.gov data that took place in Washington DC, New York City, San Francisco, and San Diego.

Managed three teams of 28 interns to coordinate logistics of seminar on "The Ethical Challenges of Development" in Buenos Aires, Argentina, attended by over 1,700 students, economists, academics and professionals.
