Our lab at SRMIST focus on identifying the genetic basis of children with unexplained dysmorphic features and developmental delay/intellectual disability using known conventional and molecular techniques. We have collaborated with the department of Paediatric Medicine and Neonatology at SRM Medical college Hospital and Research Center, Kattankulathur for both Selective research excellence and Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology projects. Our laboratory regularly receives samples for processing banding cytogenetic analysis and molecular testing in children with congenital anomalies referred by the Centre. As part of the students’ projects under my guidance, we have done molecular analysis of ATP7B gene mutation analysis in a South Indian family with Wilson’s disease.Under SRM selective research excellence grant, I am carrying out research project titled “A Study to determine the association of GATA4 and TBX5 polymorphisms in patients with Congenital Heart Defects” by using molecular techniques. A total of 40 children were identified with several types of heart defects over a period of 2 years (2017-2019) attending the 6 outpatients' clinic at SRM Hospital and Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Chennai.

Here, I was introduced to several human metabolic, chromosomal and single gene disorders. I also collaborated with several laboratories abroad for identifying the underlying cause for these genetic conditions. Further, I was involved in teaching basic medical genetics for both undergraduate students and graduate students in the department of Medical Genetics at the institute.
