I've been in the newspaper business 30 years, the past 24 of them with Swift Communications, Inc. I started with Swift as a reporter/editor with The Union, a daily newspaper in the Northern California town of Grass Valley, in 1984. Left Grass Valley to edit and manage various Lake Tahoe area newspapers in 1987 and returned to The Union as publisher in 2001. While publishing a weekly newspaper in Incline Village, Lake Tahoe I registered www.reno.com and www.tahoe.com, racognizing that the Web offered lots of opportunities for newspapers to go digital. "We are," I reasoned, "in the information business and who better to take advantage of the information highway than us?" I went to Carson City to publish that capital city newspaper in 1995, when Swift purchased the Nevada Appeal. By the way...still trying to figure a way to make a profit on the Web and wondering why newspapers started giving their content away for free online. In retrospect it probably wasn't such a great idea. Maybe I should have registered sex.com instead. It was probably available at the time and is probably making money.
