About Jeff Austin

My software development career began, strangely enough, as a courier. I was hired on as a courier at Geazone Eco-Courier as their first employee. At the time, we had only rudimentary delivery management and invoicing capabilities that required a lot of manual work. In the evenings and between deliveries, I taught myself to program and eventually developed and implemented a cross-platform mobile, a desktop, and web applications. This project - which I still maintain to this day - made me realize that I had a real passion for software development and that it was something I wanted to build a career on so I made the decision to enroll at Camosun College in the Computer Systems Technology diploma program.Camosun offered us a practical education in which we learned the fundamentals of computer science needed for us to be productive job-ready employees. During this time, I had the opportunity to work on, and lead, some interesting projects which can be found below. As graduation approached, I knew that I wanted to gain a more rigorous computer science education to complement the practical skills I now possessed so made the decision to enroll in the Computer Science program at the University of Victoria. At the same time that I started at UVic, I also got a part-time remote Javascript contracting position with Fillz. Between university and working with Fillz, and later projects and an 8-month coop at Carmanah Technologies, I was able to attain the computer science education I was seeking; furthermore, and perhaps equally as importantly, I learned the importance of communication, collaboration, and time management.
