I'm back!! I've finally returned to what I love best: software development!I say "return" because this is what I did before "life" happened! After graduating in 1989 with a computer science/mathematics degree (summa cum laude, no less!), I settled into a great job developing software for Lockheed Martin. After several years I was asked to become an embedded engineer with one of our delivered products -- but only for a year. After this year quickly passed, I was asked to do another. And then a third -- but that was it. By this point, however, my wife and kids were happy with their new lives and didn't want to leave. I was given an option to stay but it had to be permanent. Since the job still required interesting software work, I agreed. Unfortunately, within a few years, the DoD clamped down on any software changes in the field going so far as to remove all source code, compilers and debuggers. Not only did this make the job more difficult, it eliminated my desire to stay. Of course, at this point I had no choice. The family was entrenched and the wife's career established. My job evolved from software engineer to system administrator. Not that there's anything wrong with that! It's just not what I wanted to do with my career. Yes, I could have left the company but I was fully vested in their pension plan. That was too much to walk away from.So fast forward another 15 years... to my first exit opportunity! In Sept. 2014, I became eligible for retirement. I wasted little time. On Mar 13, 2015, I pulled the trigger and am currently (and temporarily) living with my highly accomplished software engineer son in Denver where I am fully immersed in an effort to modernize my software skills. Under my son's tutelage and through my own efforts via on-line tutorials and courses, I now have a solid foundation in the RUBY / RAILS / Postgres stack. I am ready, willing and able to rejoin the workforce as a RAILS developer or any other capacity as a modern software developer.

Asset allocation)* the development of Softcopy Mapping System (A software library designed to provide interactive capabilities with digital map features and terrain information)* improvements to Rapid Information System (Store and forward information system. Message distribution. Format and classification verification.)* improvements to Multi-Source Correlation System (Air and ground situational awareness for real-time support to tactical operations and intelligence centers. Supports TADIL, TIBS, TRAP, etc.)Utilized expertise in:programming languages: C, C++, ADATools: Builder Xcessory, ClearCase (Case tools and source control management) Solaris Modular Debugger (mdb)Major contributions: * Developed and implemented algorithm for determining safest route through a given state space containing various degrees of threats. Utilized algorithm developed and published during senior year in college. * Designed and implemented lexical scanner used frequently within the department. Evolved into markup language parser allowing context-free configuration files looking much like modern XML. -
Engineering Design SupportLockheed Martin Jun 1980 - Jan 1989Bethesda, Md, UsDuties consisted of various design support roles including the following:* Drafting (pencil and paper)* Was an early adapter of Computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) generating mechanical and electrical drawings using ComputerVision graphics system. Wrote many scripts using the system's proprietary interpretive programming language (NewVar), and compiled many programs using Fortran. -
Software EngineerHome Jan 1989 - Jan 1990It's worth mentioning that I've spent a significant amount of time over the years developing software applications in my spare time:1) Navigation software. Before MapQuest existed (or even the WWW for that matter), I designed and developed a navigation system that generated the shortest (or fastest) route between any two points in a graphical network (in this case, roads). I used a version of Dijkstra's algorithm developed while in college and published shortly thereafter. It achieved an average increase in efficiency of 18 percent over the original. The vision at the time was to sell the software to gas stations, hotels, etc, where travelers typically stop to ask for directions. The long term vision included an actual device installed in cars that would display directions, one step at a time. There was no GPS at the time so drivers would have been required to hit a "next" button after completing each step of the route. I had a working prototype and even hired someone to help generate a road database for Austin, TX . Unfortunately, for various personal reasons, the product never made it to production.2) Blackjack Simulator/Game. Designed and developed using Pascal and Boreland IDE. Implemented fully functional game (with ASCII graphics) and outcome simulator for the purpose of determining best play in all possible scenarios.3) Created "old school" adventure game using the Lisp programming language.4) Created full-screen text editor using nothing but assembly language.
