My research focus is at the intersection of planning and deep learning, with the aim of developing techniques that empower robots to take advantage of big data to enhance their understanding of the world and decision making process.This union has lead to my work exploring data-driven comparisons of spatio-temporal monitoring techniques of ocean temperatures(OCEANS2015) and the deep learning of structured environments for robotic search(IROS2016).The ocean monitoring techniques focused on using gaussian processes to model the ocean while using various planners to optimize movements through the ocean.This exposed the weakness of gaussian processes extrapolation and pushed me to explore modeling environments with deep learning.My first work in this area involves modeling office buildings for exit prediction.In building towards my thesis, I will look to combine modeling ocean temperatures and the decision making process straight into a deep learner to improve spatio-temporal planning.
