Uhn Biospecimen Sciences Program

• Reports to the senior research technician, manager and director. Responsible for assisting permanent staff with the daily operations at the Biobank • Took part in every technical aspect of Biobanking and obtained a very comprehensive perspective understanding of how the Biobank functions as a whole• Scanned and organized over 3,000 H&E stained slides and Tissue Micro-Array (TMA) slides using SCAN SCOPE XT (by APERIO) onto a digital slides database called SPECTRUM• Troubleshoot problems concerning SCAN SCOPE XT on a daily basis and identified effective solutions to avoid problems• Trained in operating a Tissue Micro Array (TMA) machine to construct a TMA paraffin block• Trained in analyzing scanned H&E and TMA slides using simple algorithms in ImageScope and GENIE software.• Retrieved/managed/organized over 10,000 paraffin blocks into labelled cardboard boxes for easy access and storage• Assisted pathologists' assistant with accessioning/recording/labeling of over 500 cases of fresh tissue samples as they come in from surgery. Had many opportunities to observe processing and preparation of fresh tissue samples e.g. gynecological tissue, lung, liver, kidney, GI etc• Worked closely with Biobank director, Dr. Patricia Shaw, on a daily basis to complete the Familiar Ovarian Tumor Study (FOTS). Managed an Excel worksheet of histological and staging related data from ~1,000 patients
