At DES, I've applied thirty years of low-voltage electronics experience, including more than fifteen directly related to the smart building industry, to help develop new projects and to bring awareness to engineers, architects, rep firms and customers of the latest technology. As part of my job here, I've added to my knowledge studying renewable energy systems, EV charging, the electrical grid, and VoltServer's Digital Electricity, a new NEC 2023 Article 726 power source called Class 4, fault-managed power (FMP). As the in-house expert on FMP, I designed and built a demo kit, used it to create content for DES marketing videos, traveled to more than a dozen regional engineering firms to introduce the technology and train the engineers on its capabilities, and worked directly with VoltServer to develop FMP Training Kits for electrical journeymen, apprentices, and contractors nationwide. Building system integration is the sweet spot for the tech I teach, so I'm part of the team at DES that discusses customer strategies for the integration of an untold number of networking, lighting, BMS, IoT, and security applications for streamlining building system efficiency. Then, as an Account Manager, not only can I leverage years of experience to create custom solutions for tech-savvy clients, but I can instruct the engineers, help design the implementations, teach the technicians, and track the project until it's complete, sharing the responsibility with all stakeholders to make sure the customer got what they wanted.

Leveraging extensive lighting controls experience and network and infrastructure classes, I joined Platformatics to help develop their PoE lighting controls solution. I was involved in prototyping, product development, testing, and deployment, as well as evaluation of data gathered and streamlining the display of that data. Additionally, I evaluated prints for system compatibility and conducted take-offs for system planning and deployment. As you can imagine, in a small company we all wore multiple hats. Customer service, inventory tracking, shipping, jobsite coordination, troubleshooting, and overall customer satisfaction were part of the daily routine in the office. Discussing the technology at conferences and trade shows with curious onlookers and potential customers was also typical. Ultimately, as with any infrastructure system, PoE lighting can be either the main component of a building data platform, or a necessary component in the larger overall vision for smart-building data-gathering, information, and control. We lived that idea every day.

Fonken Transportation is a line-haul subcontractor for the FedEx Corporation. Using a semi-truck, I hauled FedEx freight from customer to terminal and between terminals using FedEx Ground's fleet of doubles and 53' dry vans.

I was an intern prior to and during the spring 2019 semester while attending Ivy Tech for Network Infrastructure. Platformatics is the leader in PoE lighting and smart-building integration. The company’s leadership is continually building on PoE experience which reaches back to the technology’s infancy at Cisco. I was part of the Engineering Services team during my time, which tests equipment/code improvements and provides ongoing customer system support.

Bloomington, Indiana

It was my responsibility at IU to design, spec, install, verify programming of, and maintain the access control system for the residence halls and dining halls at Indiana University, Bloomington. I led a team of techs who maintained more than 3500 card access controlled entrances and was in the process of planning the addition of 1500 more in the following 3 years. I was also responsible for integrating and maintaining the handicap entrances on all residence halls and dining halls, as well as for maintaining the Lutron lighting control systems in those same buildings.

As Field Service Engineer, I was primarily responsible for verifying the successful installation, programming, and customer satisfaction of Lutron commercial lighting control systems across most of the lower 48 states plus several Canadian provinces. These systems included Lutron Quantum, 3000, GP/4000, QS, ESN, and LCP/XPS. As the Lutron expert on site, I worked with the electrical contractor to insure the correct installation of the equipment of both the low voltage and line voltage Lutron components. I was also responsible for the revision of and correct programming of the equipment, whether just in a conference room or for multiple buildings on a campus. In order to be successful, I would help troubleshoot issues that involved equipment failure, installation, and programming. My consistent end-goal on every project was to exceed the customer's expectations. For projects with the Darden Family of Restaurants, I conducted pre-construction lighting/electrical site surveys and post-construction Lutron lighting system programming, commissioning, and evaluation. I was also trained in the programming of Marlin Hercules lighting control with similar responsibilities.
