Since commencement of SmartsSat CRC, I have worked with the research team to assist in the facilitating collaborative space projects with industry, government and research partners.

I have a long history of creating, developing and managing relationships in the research and development space. I have worked extensively in the technology area and primarily working at the intersection of academia, industry and government. My experience spans from technology development, project and program management as well as operations management and business development.My passion is working to ensure that stakeholders aims and goals are well understood, and forming successful partnership programs, projects and outcomes. I have a technical background in wireless communications, particularly satellite communications and enjoy combining technical, operations, contracts, project management and business development skills in the work I undertake.I have worked extensively with Cooperative Research Centres (CRC). I enjoy assisting organisations with bid/strategy development, as well as creating something that can operate in practise. I have worked extensively connecting universities with industry/government, achieving success through bidding for, and managing complex programs.My CRC experience includes:- iMOVE CRC (Intelligent Transport) – Bid Coordinator. Following bid success, I was Programs Director (COO-equivalent) for 2.5 years, responsible for set up and operations of all research and education.- SmartSat CRC (New space technologies) – Assisted with startup, program manager facilitating space projects for Australia.- CRC SAAFE (Solving Antimicrobial Resistance in Agribusiness, Food, and Environment) - Bid Manager, Stage 2 and advice on startup.- Scaling Green Hydrogen CRC – Assist with Stage 2 bid. Chief Operating Officer.

Following my role as Bid Coordinator, assisting to secure $55m in Commonwealth funding (to match a similar amount raised from government, industry and academia), I commenced as Programs Director to set up and operate the research and development program. This involved developing, facilitating, creating and assisting our partners to undertake projects over the next 10 years that really make a difference to mobility in Australia and internationally.iMOVE Australia manages the iMOVE CRC. Announced in March 2017, iMOVE is the result of a successful bid to the Australian federal government's Cooperative Research Centres Program. The total program will operate until 2017, initially involve 45 partners from government, industry and research organisations, with a total of approximately $240m cash and in-kind resources.iMOVE facilitates and manages a number of industry-focussed R&D projects and an education program that will enhance personal mobility and freight mobility in Australia - making a difference to the movement of people and things!

My role involved strategic and day-to-day management of a group of highly skilled researchers, engineers, postgraduate students and support staff within ITR. We produce world class research, research education, and the realisation of research outcomes with industry and government in the broad area of wireless telecommunications, and with specific focus in: - Satellite Communications - High Speed Communications - Flexible Radios and Networks - Computational and Theoretical NeuroscienceMy role as Director occurred at a time of considerable change, and I was responsible for the planning for the integration of this unit into existing structures, as well as initial implementation actions.

The role focuses on business development, client management, proposal generation, contract management and commercialisation of products and services in a highly innovative research and development environmentMy role involved significant interaction with a number of national and international stakeholders, requiring me to demonstrate leadership and initiative in identifying, nurturing, implementing and monitoring strategies to ensure successful relationships leading to beneficial research and development programs that met customer needs. Research income for the period was between $6m to $14m per annum.Some example programs include:• Bringing together national and international partners, and taking program role as Project Prime, with overall management responsibility for a $12.5m satellite data collection project involving national and international research providers and industry. The “Global Sensor Network” (GSN) program is currently being spun out as a business from UniSA.• Project Manager for team of employees and contractors providing communications application software and engineering services to the Defence Materiel Organisation. The project substantially involved the consolidation, documentation and enhancement to Defence’s Theatre Broadcast Satellite System.• Payload Development Manager for the development of a space-qualified, Australian-built communications payload that was launched in December 2002. This role involved management of three subsystem teams, as well as liaison with the satellite bus and integration teams.Additionally, I developed and provided policy and strategic direction within the Institute as well as key input to operational matters, as well as more broadly within UniSA.

The position had prime responsibility for financial, human resource and operations management within ITR - having staff numbers of approximately 40, with annual revenues up to $8m.This position also involved considerable support to the Business Manager, incorporating contract and proposal preparation, negotiation and management. I was manager to the ITR Project Managers, ensuring local compliance to the University’s ISO 9000 Project Management accreditation.I had various roles as Project Manager and Project Coordinator on a number of key research and development projects for companies such as Intelsat, ICO, Vodafone, OTC (Telstra) and Inmarsat.

Technical involvement on various projects, predominantly in the satellite communications area. Major projects included:- design, simulation and development of core forward error correction code processing blocks for 45 Mbit/s codec;- simulation decoder for bandwidth efficient communications at 155 Mbit/s;- research into implementation (quantisation) effects of decoder performance;- investigation into feasibility and cost of a custom, application specific integrated circuit implementation of a 45 Mbit/s codec;- design and implementation of Viterbi decoder to 45 Mbit/s using large scale integrated circuit devices.In addition to the technical roles, I also had responsibility for project management and coordination in a number of programs. The most notable was as Project Coordinator for a 3 year, 6 person project relating to the design and development of future multi-mode wireless handset terminals.

Design and implementation of microprocessor controlled multi-input industrial instrumentation. System design and programming of electrical Programmable Logic Controller units for primary industry (timber) applications.Considerable involvement in design and construction of infra-red, optically based timber size measurement system.

Worked with Electrical Engineer responsible for capital electrical and control works for group timber companies. Most significant job was as part of a two person team responsible for the coordination, design and integration of electrical logic, power and electronic systems for a new, state-of-the-art sawmill operation in Tumult, NSW. I was present and supervised major electrical installation work (aged 23) and had principal on-site responsibility during commissioning and testing phases. The resultant plant was one of the most advanced in the world at that time.

One of a small team of electricians responsible for all site maintenance and minor works installation at the Mount Gambier Hospital. This included initial fault diagnosis on medical equipment as well as lift maintenance and repair.
