I’m a data analyst, a data quality evangelist, a data visualisation connoisseur, and I have a keen interest in spatial data. I’m also a certified mental health first aider.I know what you’re thinking – “you’ve gone too broad”. In a field like data science, where there is so much fascinating stuff to work on, it’s hard not to have eclectic professional interests. After spending 14 years in the Australian Army, I changed careers to data science where I have worked on projects modelling regional tourism in New Zealand, I’ve rebuilt reporting pipelines used to communicate national oil and gas volumes to the IEA, I’ve provided statistical reporting and analysis support to the NZ Search and Rescue sector, and most recently I’ve been analysing education projects.It has become a bit of a cliché to hear people talk about their passion, but over the last few years I’ve found myself being quite outspoken on the value data governance and management brings to an organisation’s data science program. Data analysis is fun and finding insights can be exciting, but if your underlying data, or the pipeline that delivers that data to your analysis teams, is flawed you might as well be writing fiction.Data science is a fascinating career pathway and there is so much interesting stuff happening in the field these days. When I studied statistics one of my lecturers always used to say that “statistics lets you play in everyone else’s backyard”. Data science is the same, and I can’t wait to see what backyards my career will eventually lead to.
