Senior Director, Behavioral Health Clinical Operations

Saint Louis, Mo, Us

Centene underwent a major transformation of their Behavioral Health division. One of the biggest transformative moves was to take a "Market" model and evolve it into a National model. I held the responsibility for aligning the Inpatient Behavioral Health program into this new, national model. In this leadership role, some of the accomplishments I am most proud of include:Implementation of a new discharge planning protocol resulting in readmission reduction in multiple statesDevelopment and execution of a broad clinical quality push that led to length of stay and cost reductionIntegration of Utilization Management functions in five large states--integrating behavioral health operations into physical health operationsCreation of a clinical strategy focused on long lengths of stay (Inpatient Psychiatric) that resulted in significant savings on outlier cases (11+ days)The Spearheading of a new communication push for a large, decentralized team including an internal podcast, weekly "top 5" email to all staff, and in-depth staff engagement interviews

Mar 2017 - Dec 2018

Regional Director, Behavioral Health

Saint Louis, Mo, Us

As my career and time at Centene evolved, I was asked to move from a localized leadership role into a newly created Regional Director role. At its peak, this role provided oversight over 5 markets with over 1 million covered lives. This experience was full of challenges, items learned, and numerous wins:I was a part of turning around a large state's Behavioral Health operation including 31% LOS reduction, staff turnover reduction, and Provider concern reductionNavigated large Medicaid Product expansions and state Medicaid procurement/re-procurement effortsDeveloped broad oversight tools and methodologies to allow for ongoing scaling of the businessBuilt a new Utilization Management protocol which achieved 60% increase in UM production capacity without increasing staff sizeActed as point person for on-site state Medicaid re-procurement readiness reviewDeveloped methodology to produce accurate and timely state-mandated reports

Jan 2016 - Mar 2017

Clinical Director, Behavioral Health

Saint Louis, Mo, Us

After a year-long consulting engagement with Cenpatico (Centene's Behavioral Health Subsidiary at the time), I was tapped to come on full-time as a Clinical Director. The learning curve was steep, but I caught on quickly and established a reputaiton in the organization as someone who understood data-driven, clinical intervention, knew how to lead teams, and as someone who was calm under pressure. In some ways, it was a trial by fire, but in a year and a half, I got a lot done:Turned around a large state's Behavioral Health operation including 31% LOS reduction, staff turnover reduction, and Provider concern reductionNavigated large Medicaid Product expansions and state Medicaid procurement/re-procurement effortsDeveloped broad oversight tools and methodologies to allow for ongoing scaling of the businessBuilt a new Utilization Management protocol which achieved 60% increase in UM production capacity without increasing staff sizeActed as point person for on-site state Medicaid re-procurement readiness reviewDeveloped methodology to produce accurate and timely state-mandated reports

Guest Lecturer

Kennesaw, Georgia, Us

After college, I remained in contact with a handful of professors. During my time in college, I was known as a hard worker, someone who cared about their work, and as someone who asked the right kinds of questions--the kinds of questions that led to better outcomes. After graduating I returned on a semi-annual basis, usually once per semester, to contribute to some of my favorite classes.Venture Analysis guest lecturer. I typically talked about my experience in entrepreneurship and business. My favorite time was Q&A with students who were considering ventures of their own. I loved encouraging them, poking/prodding their ideas, and hopefully getting them to a new place w/ their ideas. Entrepreneurship and Creativity. I guest judge for the final project in the class, a comprehensive business plan. I evaluate the viability of the plans presented from an investment perspective. A "Shark Tank" activity before it was a thing.

May 2002 - May 2010

Counselor Intern

Us

I interned at The Center at Mount Paran. I worked under the supervision of Dr. Marcy Hardy, an awesome clinician and someone who really helped me hone in on what my work would become. I worked primarily with men on issues like depression, relationships, and career concerns. I also worked with couples and adolescents.

Aug 2007 - Apr 2008

Founder

Ecoscapes

After college, I had a short stint in accounting. I soon realized my brain was not wired to be an accountant or in the accounting field. I returned to a career path that had funded my college life--landscaping. Starting from scratch, I worked hard for 4 years and had a lot of success. I met a ton of great people and really enjoyed getting to know my customers. It was a really fun and challenging experience. In 2006, I made the decision to go back to graduate school to become a counselor. About halfway through my graduate program at Georgia State, I was able to successfully sell the business. I was able to do this because I had kept excellent financial and customer records and had developed a strong reputation for the company.
