Fly fishing is my zen. It is often suggested for veterans returning from combat to help them manage post-traumatic stress disorder and has certainly been a favorite hobby among the C-suite due to its' ability to help them disconnect from their daily stresses at work, and even at home.This is accomplished by filling the brain, and your senses, with an incredible amount of data to execute strategic and tactical planning when attempting to fool these incredibly sensitive creatures (trout). Their scope of vision is far wider than ours, their reactions to sudden movements are often abrupt, their natural fear of more terrifying predators (eagles, hawks, bears, etc.), and their sensitivity to water temperature and lighting are only a few of the challenges facing a fisherman who is trying to replicate the natural state (at that moment) when casting a fly.Why is this important in business? Awareness of your surroundings, the ability to adapt to changing conditions, the acknowledgement that what worked yesterday probably won't work today, and a commitment to patiently awaiting a positive outcome are all critical traits of great business leaders. Caddis is the name of a fly that is commonly seen in the Northeastern United States and one which should always be considered when trying to match a hatch. To give you just a little more of a metaphorical message, the caddis goes through several stages in its' lifecycle which the fisherman should consider - larvae, pupa, wet fly, emerger, dry fly and spinner. Consider each of these tools (much like some of the technological tools, sales tools, or training tools) that work in certain circumstances, but are less effective in other scenarios. As a consequence of this metaphor, I have named my new venture Caddis LLC.
