Manage projects in the North American Region in the $5 M to $20 M range from conception to operation. Requires a close working relationship with first-line managers at the plant site. Project Engineering Manager: Lead an engineering team consisting of outside engineering firm(s) and internal global engineering SME’s to develop the engineering package. Provide direction and make decisions as engineering progresses. Ensure objectives defined in the scope and design criteria are met. Types of engineering tasks: Develop specifications for pollution control equipment, setup dispersions modeling design criteria, oversee the development of controls design, DCS architecture, and equipment & instrument specifications.

Responsible for all capital projects at the Tuscola plant site. Led a team of 3-4 project engineers to manage $4 MM to $6 MM of capital per year. Key responsibilities include working with management to develop the FY capital budget, ensure projects are properly resourced, leverage outside engineering firms for support, ensure project are executed safely, providing clear scope definition and scope alignment with all stakeholders, and construction management. A typical year is completion of 20-25 projects with no recordable incidents and all managed within budget. In addition to the capital management role, Process Engineering skills were leveraged to lead plant problem-solving efforts and provide design solutions. Notable project include RCRA FRP Tank Replacement (250 K gallon) / Acid Storage Tks (32% HCl), Loadout & piping systems / HCl scrubbers and chlorine abatement system to reduce stack emissions for MACT compliance / Replacement Projects: Specialty bag filters for large, corrosive gas flows, vaporizers, heat exchangers, DCS upgrades to Delta V / Infrastructure for Air Liquide America N2 plant / Assisted with design and fabrication of specialty burners for India & Jiangxi China facilities.Served a PSM Engineering Role: • Facilitated PHA’s using Leader PHA software by ABS Group.• Worked with consultants to develop dispersion modeling for hazardous release scenarios• Assisted in publishing a paper on “Using ISA 84, HAZOP, and LOPA to Design Safety Instrumented Systems”. Presented paper at AICHE meeting.

Provided process and design engineering support for a fumed silica expansion project. Project included debottleneck of acid absorption area, installation of a reactor with new technology, expanding utility feeds, and product packaging system debottleneck. Role included all equipment sizing, designing for PSM compliance, and overseeing DCS (Delta V) system design. Managed a full-service engineering firm that provided cost tracking service, procurement, scheduling, and field construction supervision. Developed the commissioning plan and was the startup team leader. Startup went very smoothly. Cabot management viewed the execution of this project as highly successful.

Managed a fumed silica production unit. Responsible for maintaining high safety standards, high operability factors, and driving toward product quality improvements. This job required an understanding of the process, the ability to develop and coordinate process improvement plans with a cross-functional group of people, and the ability to foster an environment that promotes innovation. Specific responsibilities include:Maintain ISO Certification: Updated control plans. Updated SOP’s to improve operating consistency and product tracking. Developed a system to identify and calibrate critical process control instruments.Quality Improvements: Worked with a cross-functional team to monitor process using SPC methods. This resulted in dramatic step changes in the quality performance of the unit. One key parameter was driven to a region beyond the detection limit of the analytical instrument.DCS / PLC Support: Provided support for the DCS and PLC controls ranging from getting the system in operation after a power outage to configuring the system for process improvement projects.

Managed capital projects from conception through implementation. Responsible for developing project justification, cost estimate, PFD’s, and P&ID’s, specified equipment and instrumentation, tracked project cost and schedule, and lead startup and commissioning. Notable projects:New Process Unit ($1.0 MM): Installed a batch process for treating fumed silica. Process included powder-conveying equipment, batch tanks, and configuration of PLC for a 4 step batch process. Unit Expansion ($2.5 MM): Installed new reactor system and expanded acid area capacity. This project was in place within 8 months and resulted in a capacity increase that netted an estimated $5.0 MM / yr.

Plant Engineer for a soybean processing plant. Responsible for purchasing maintenance supplies, served as an operator in soybean liquid extraction and distillation recovery unit. Supervised maintenance during plant shutdowns. Responsible for the boiler and cooling tower water treatment programs. Managed a variety of projects: Palletizing System; Storage Tank Agitation System; Drag Conveyors; Underground Storage Tank Removal; Bag Filter Retrofit Kits; Elevator Leg Monitors.
