Returned to role to realign school around equity-driven and learner-centered practices. Focused professional development on interest-driven learning and established structures to co-govern with students. Reorganized recruitment practices to flip enrollment pattern in two years from 18% to 66% of incoming students from highest-FRL elementary schools in district. Renewed multi-year accreditation and State Board of Education waiver from credit-based graduation. Elevated enrollment to highest in school's history despite declining district enrollment. Substantively increased overall staff diversity, including in leadership roles.

In addition to description below, conducted feasibility assessments and supported school districts and school leaders to design (or redesign) secondary schools around Big Picture Learning distinguishers.

Puget Sound Region

Established regional consortium of innovating secondary schools. Stewarded numerous schools/districts through state waiver process and supported redesign of multiple alternative schools around the state and in Idaho and Oregon, including Gibson Ek High School, Union High School, Methow Valley Independent Learning Center, etc. Convened charter and district school leaders and cabinet-level district staff in critical friends groups around innovating for equity. Established School Foundry, a leadership incubator for school founders. Secured funding from ECMC Foundation. Priority recruitment for leaders of color. Supported development of Impact Public Schools, Why Not You Academy, Lumen High School, and Whatcom Intergenerational High School, among others. Hosted community forums with guest authors and speakers to engage public on innovating public schools for equity.

Conceived and launched first start-up Big Picture school in Washington state, focused on improving graduation and post-secondary outcomes for district’s Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Pacific Islander students. Established initial relationship with district, secured grant funding, negotiated approval with school board, recruited staff and families. Received waiver from State Board of Education to replace credit-based w/ competency-based graduation (first of now 13+ schools in state utilizing this waiver). School led all district high schools in 5 of 5 quality indicators in 2008 district-wide parent survey. > 90% parent participation in student exhibitions and learning plan development. Collaborated with Higher Education Coordinating Board and admissions directors of Washington’s four-year colleges to develop competency-based transcript and admissions pathways for traditionally underrepresented students. Graduates have now been accepted to all of Washington’s public four year colleges. Recognized as Washington State “Innovative School,” 2011. Hosted countless visits from practitioners learning about competency-based instruction, performance-based assessment, internship programs, interest-driven and real-world learning, project-based learning, and positive school culture.
