Product DevelopmentCreate customer facing user interfaces for various Digi products. Some of these UI's are hosted in Digi's Device Cloud platform and some of them are embedded within Digi networking products.Developed User Interfaces for Digi's new network router products. Customers use this web UI to setup and configure their router. Routers can be complex but we strive to make our UI's straightforward and easy to use for both mobile and desktop users. We interact with our customers early and often to get feedback on usability and function of the UI. We leverage advanced development frameworks such as react and meteor to provide a realtime display of the routers state. Specifically tasks I perform on this team include:● Member of an Agile scrum team utilizing related processes and tools● Design and development of components running in the router as well as in the browser. Developed components in javascript, python, and c++ using a variety of related technologies.● Developed automated unit and functional tests to validate new features and detect regressions● Provide assistance with documentation and support of product features

Created remote monitoring and control solutions for customers. Dealt with wide variety of remote equipment such as pumps, meters, appliances, etc. While customers were experts in their domain, they lacked the knowledge and resource to develop connected solutions. My role was to analyze their requirements and domain and then design and develop solutions. At the same time, I looked for ways to accelerate the delivery of and lower the overall cost of these custom solutions. Specifically the roles and tasks I performed were:Solutions ArchitectWork with the custom solutions team to help them design Device Cloud applications.● Analyze and distill customer requirements● Identify and review potential architecture choices● Define and size solution effort● Deliver and review solution proposal with customer as required● Leads team to develop features and actively participates in development of those features● Identifies opportunities in re-usable application infrastructure that can be leveraged in future customer solutionsReusable Framework ArchitectInvestigate and propose new platform and reusable component framework to accelerate delivery of custom solutions.● Analyze requirements of existing and proposed solutions● Survey field of delivery platforms and select appropriate direction● Survey field of development technologies and select appropriate direction● Propose strategy for development of application framework and delivery of products based on it● Design major components of the application framework, scope the effort, and create a development roadmap.● Leads framework development activity● Implements major components of frameworkDuring this time I surveyed and prototyped solutions using a variety of web application technologies and deployment environments. Device CloudArchitect and development lead for Digi’s Device Cloud. This platform connects customers with their remote assets by offering a variety of subscribable data and communication services. A clustered platform that includes both web portal and machine-to-machine interfaces, iDigi scales to support thousands of customers with millions of assets. My work included:● Architect/development lead:⇨Collaborated with customers, product management, and engineering to define requirements⇨Architected system design and developed platform and feature specifications⇨Evaluated viability of new technologies through many rapid prototype cycles⇨Worked with team to partition and size tasks and created detailed development plans⇨Effectively employed both iterative and agile development methodologies● Designed database schemas, creation and migration scripts, and underlying data access (DAO) layers● Developed or co-developed many higher level services such as distributed job management, remote data streaming services, rule-based alarm services, and REST web services● Analyzed and tuned system components resulting in several orders of magnitude improvement in system throughputDigiESPDevelopment lead of an eclipse based IDE for Digi’s embedded device kits. Extended eclipse to incorporate Digi’s cross-compiling C/C++ toolchain. Greatly simplified the process of creating, downloading, and remotely debugging embedded applications. Product supports dozens of embedded kits with many kinds of I/O and numerous samples. Beyond team lead activities my work included:● Created Eclipse extensions to customize the user experience (menu’s, toolbars, and view layout)● Co-developed communication protocols and channels to interact with remote hardware● Developed cheat sheets that interactively illustrate common developer tasks● Worked with marketing to create quick-start guides to ease customers into the product

Anywhere DisplayDevelopment lead of an embedded remote display product. Targeted as a network enabled replacement for expensive serial terminal equipment it is commonly used in restaurants and other harsh environments to display work orders and other remote signage information. Subsequent releases included support to network enable conference room video projectors. Beyond team lead activities my work included:● Developed a cross-platform c++ graphics subsystem and window manager for embedded platform● Created USB drivers for attached devices including keyboard, mouse, touch screens, card readers, and flash memory sticks● Implemented and/or ported decoders for various graphic image formats including jpeg, png, and gif● Helped port higher level graphic services including VNC, Putty, and true-type fonts● Created slide-show application to be coupled with video projectorConnect SP Device ServerDeveloped the web based configuration interface for the initial line of Digi Connect device servers. This was a Swing based java applet that was hosted on a device the size of an ethernet jack. It was launched through JNLP and communicated with the device through HTTP using an XML configuration protocol.University Student Research & Test LabPartnered with Professor Gerald Cichanowski at Winona State University to form a student research and test lab that was sponsored by Digi. I promoted and sold the idea to Digi management and have worked with Dr Cichanowski to foster the program. We sponsor five or six students a year who help us test our existing products and research new ones. This program has had great benefits to Digi, the university, and especially the students. We have hired quite a few of these students over the years.

Matchprint Color Proofing SystemWorked on team to design and develop distributed print management solutions for Imation’s MatchPrint professional color proofing systems. This java based system allowed the user to submit and route jobs to the appropriate MatchPrint color printer based upon Quality of Service attributes specified by the user. Specifically I developed the distributed job dispatch and processing system as well as the JNI interface to communicate with the underlying Raster Image Processing (RIP) engine.Sun Storage Management SolutionsDesigned and developed management software for Sun Microsystems storage products. These components were built in Java using Sun’s JINI and JIRO technologies. Teamed with Sun to gather requirements, designed and modeled solutions in UML, implemented solutions and developed graphical demonstration applications that were used by Sun at numerous trade shows.

Business Application FrameworkLed teams developing server infrastructure and user tooling for IBM’s SanFrancisco Business Application Framework (precursor to IBM WebSphere). In addition to normal team lead activities, I did the following:● Co-designed and developed underlying business object registration and distribution mechanism● Extended java’s remote method invocation (rmi) mechanism to support distributed transactions and security● Developed AWT based UI console for configuring and managing remote servers in the cluster● Performed usability analysis and rewrite of Swing UI for a UML modeling tool that generated SF framework business objects and applications● Created Swing UI for an interactive tool to migrate SF business objects to EJB’sSystem Monitoring ToolsTeam leader on development of distributed multi-system monitoring tool. Designed for the systems manager who is responsible for managing a large number of AS/400 systems in a 24x7 environment. Product was written in C++ and included real-time graphics display of system performance with drill down problem analysis. In addition to product design and implementation work, I also coordinated with our tech writers to document the tool.

Performance Analysis ToolsTeam leader/chief architect of performance analysis toolset for AS/400 systems (PEX). New RISC processor model necessitated new collection and analysis tools. Total redesign incorporated the function of numerous older tools into a single integrated toolset with consistent interfaces for collection control and data analysis. This toolset has been very successful and remains the primary performance analysis tool on the AS/400 today. I was involved in all aspects of development of this system from initial requirements analysis, to architecture and design, to implementation and support. This project was especially challenging as it was developed for a new class of hardware that was still under development as we created the system. There were many dependencies to resolve and many early and frequent releases to coordinate. I did a lot of SQL and C++ development on this project.Benchmarking ToolsMember of team to create a distributed benchmark simulation system. System drove workloads of typical user activity against AS/400 servers while simultaneously measuring and recording system response times which were then aggregated and published as industry benchmark results. Specifically I worked on tools to define user workloads, distribute and control execution of the workloads, and aggregate and report on the recorded results. This project involved a significant amount of protocol design and inter-host communication work using C and named pipes.Performance AnalystAnalyzed performance of display subsystems on the AS/400. Defined performance requirements and specifications; used variety of modeling techniques to analyze performance of proposed designs; developed and executed test suites to measure performance; analyzed results and proposed improvements.

Special Purpose Processor Development GroupOur group developed Electronic Computer Aided Design software (MagiCAD) for the Department of Defense (DARPA) in support of their high speed electronic research: Designed and implemented a variety of projects in the areas of logic simulation, interactive graphics display, and circuit verification. My specific area of focus was simulation including design and development of an event driven logic simulator - supporting gate level and HLL user models, and min/max timing based off capacitive load of routed circuit. These projects were all written in C.
