A skilled composer who works in both electronic and acoustic media, Abell is also a well-known and highly regarded performance artist, writer, editor, and photographer. He has taught in numerous interdisciplinary programs, including the graduate program in Interdisciplinary Arts at Columbia College Chicago, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's First-Year Program, and the Talent Identification Program (TIP) at Duke University. He has worked as a consultant nationally on the development of interdisciplinary curricula, and contributed an essay to the book "Innovations in Interdisciplinary Teaching." His performance art works have been presented in venues from southern California to upstate New York, and his work was included in the Museum of Contemporary Art's exhibition "Art in Chicago, 1945 - 1995." Abell was a contributing editor of "The New Art Examiner" from 1983 to 1994, and the editor of "Chicago Artists' News" from 1992 to 1997. He recently completed work on a "lip-synch opera" entitled "Confusion," and is in the midst of writing the catalogue raisonée of a fictional photographer.Specialties: Abell has extensive experience in higher education administration, having functioned as Acting Chair of his department on five different occasions, and is adept at such areas as curriculum development, planning, budgeting, and personnel issues.
