Finisar Australia design and manufacture fibre optic devices that are utilised in telecommunication networks worldwide. On average we produced 400 fibre optic devices each week.I started working at Finisar as a Production Engineer in Calibration and Final Test. After 1 year I was promoted to Team Leader of Calibration, Final Test and Final Assembly where I supervised 12 team members in the Afternoon Shift (14:30 – 22:30). The following year I was promoted to Production Supervisor/Area Technical Leader supervising 25 team members and 3 Team Leaders. I took it upon myself to manage the production of a low volume product called WaveShaper. We produced at most 10 each week depending on demand. I attended weekly meetings with the Planning Team to determine what was required to ship that week and discuss any reasons for delays e.g. part shortages, stores taking too long to issue the work order requests, labour issues as we only had one team member in this area.I worked closely with the Quality Department predominantly helping them to perform the required tests on customer returns. Where a product was returned for a production fault e.g. screws not seated properly, parts rattling around inside the device; I would assist them with any Corrective Actions including re-training of team members. In the case of extra parts found in the device I would chair meetings with all team members to discuss how to try and eliminate this issue in the future. I would liaise with the Engineering Team with regards to tooling, set up of work benches, introduction of new equipment and maintenance/calibration of existing equipment.
