About Jeff Cavanagh
Datasets are like dogs. They come in all sizes, shapes, and temperaments.Most everyone likes to work with reasonably sized, well-structured datasets (the golden or lab types). On the other hand, larger unstructured datasets (poorly trained pitbull or Doberman types) can be intimidating or downright frightening.A quality data scientist should approach datasets as if they are training a dog. In other words, see the underlying value a dataset holds and have the patience, creativity, and adaptability to transform it into accessible and relevant insights.I experienced this first hand working in the pharma sector. One of my projects was to analyze the FDA’s database of warning letters entirely comprised of raw text.It took much creativity and a hefty dose of patience to make the data work to our advantage. The methods I knew were not up to the task. As a result, I added new tools to my repertoire. These included web scraping, text mining, and natural language processing. The result was a dashboard produced in R Shiny that breaks down warning letters into various metrics, analyzes trends, compares those trends against internal observations, and lays out how to best prevent or respond to future warning letters.My strength as a data scientist comes from the belief that every problem has a solution. If data holds insight, the problem is how to unearth/leverage that insight, and the solution is some version of first understanding the data structure and then applying, or learning then applying the right tools to access it. In this manner, extracting the value of a given amount of data becomes no problem at all.
