I am an accountant by trade, and to be honest, it's probably the language I understand best. I started at a small CPA firm in Indianapolis, doing tax and audit work. After a few years, I worked as a controller for a group of non-profits. After another few years, I was lucky enough to find a small software company out of Dayton that was looking for a remote accountant. This was the most stretching job I had ever had. I helped build our billing app and single-handedly monitored all of our client accounts to ensure they were current and billed for their usage. I learned how to report to a board and how to deal with high-emotion, high-dominance people.That led me to where I am now, back to where I started, but now as a partner in an e-commerce accounting firm, where we specifically help people who sell on Amazon. I'm passionate about this work, but that wasn't always the case. In 2022, my youngest son, Hugo, died from a short battle with the most curable form of leukemia. The loss of Hugo was(is) devastating to my core. Shortly after he died, my wife, my oldest son, and I bought a camper van and drove as far west as we could go. We visited national parks and spent time together without an agenda. I found it to be absolutely key to my family's survival. We were present with each other. When one of us needed to talk and be vulnerable, we were all there and available. To this day, I believe it was the key to us finding a way to coexist with our grief and to honor our dear Hugo. The loss of my son taught me many things, one of which is that our time on this plane of existence is uncertain. Every day, we are inundated with success stories of individuals pulling off mighty feats. It cripples many people into thinking that what they are doing isn't enough. I'm here to say that it is. We all have our own stories, and while there will only be a couple of people who succeed like Elon Musk, there will never be another you. Scale doesn't matter; what matters is that we lean into the things that we are uniquely good at and connect to those around us with whom we come in contact. One person connecting with another has just as much a shot of making an impact in this world as some new product or app.It was this realization that made me fall back in love with the idea of helping e-commerce sellers solve their margin issues and create the profitable business they deserve. I love sitting with sellers and connecting with them when they realize what they are learning. My life has led me to this, and I'm leaning into it daily.
