  • Belay

    Belay Nov 2021 - May 2024

I came in to pivot Belay from a B2C social investing app (think Instagram for stocks) to a B2B2C strategy where we market and sell insurance on stocks using a proprietray hedging algorithm.I leaned out and rebuilt my tech team for its new purpose while working with the CEO to research several partnership and hedging strategies to enable the financial product to exist. Those data-streaming financial algorithms are housed in a multi-tenant, distributed architecture and delivered through a high security, low latency realtime API for brokerage partners. To onboard partners with limited technical bandwidth, the team developed a white-labeled site optimized for rapid deployment and integration into existing infrastructure without sacrificing our considerable security and compliance requirements. Completed in just 6 weeks, we were able to execute a partnership on the brink of collapse due to their resource constraints. In another 8 weeks, we built a fully custom experience to help validate market fit with end users directly. I worked extensively with the CEO and COO to develop a marketing strategy that leveraged our existing network to drive traffic to the new product, further integrating tracking and discount codes to provide the fine-grained control necessary to measure the effectiveness of our marketing efforts.Developmentally, my very small team was able to meet the business' needs by employing the following principles:1. Deeply understanding the business and its goals, and truly collaborating with the business to ensure we're building the right thing3. Doing the risky work first4. Ensuring our development methods always adhered to the tenants of the Agile Manifesto. No dogma. No excess.5. Building a culture that supports and demands continuous improvement and learning6. Automating everything that can be automated7. Leaning in to hard things until they became easy8. Building an observability system that allowed our small team to track down issues rapidly
  • Promptworks
    Senior Architect
    Promptworks Dec 2013 - Dec 2021
    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Us
In the last few years, I’ve: Helped a startup remotely manage fleets of solar inverters using an insecure binary protocol from the 70s, piggybacked on an encrypted, private cellular network. I architected, built, secured, and scaled it. (ConnectDER)Constructed an ML data processing pipeline adhering to complicated business & regulatory rules. Lead and trained the organization on Kubernetes. Our project was the largest and first to land in production, and used to extoll the power of what a truly agile approach could bring to their large enterprise. Prepared a presentation on how to increase efficiency and speed of delivery for the rest of their international company of over 55k. (IQVIA)Contracted to lead a combined team to rearchitect an in-house software platform that powered virtually all of the business, while simultaneously adding new features. An upgrade the engine while in flight scenario. That completed, I applied my entrepreneurial background to help them work on product vision for the next 6mo to a year to adjust to the COVID crisis. (Non profit)Lead the Operations team to securely deploy the DoD's JEDI project to the Azure cloud. I inherited a manual, flaky process and automated it while managing ever-growing security requirements, and a nebulously defined deployment environment. Deployment went from a full day to less than 2 hours, and runnable by a new team with 1 week experience. All in about 3 months. The languages were different (Ruby, Python, Javascript, Elixir). The platforms were different (Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, on prem Kubernetes). The industries were different (Power, Pharma, Gov’t). The companies were different (a startup, a 55k multi-national enterprise, a large non profit, the US gov't). The sizes of the teams were different (solo, 10, 20, and more). The results were the same. All projects shipped on time. Where permitted, each company brought me back for future work, asked me to join full time, or both.
  • Snipsnap
    Vp Of Engineering
    Snipsnap Jul 2013 - Dec 2013
When I joined SnipSnap, they had already done an effective job of garnering users for their app. Coupon-loving users, however, are not the best candidate for revenue generation. So my mission was to help take the company in a new direction. I was to create a tool that would allow non-technical retailers to:• create coupons for:• SnipSnap• GoogleWallet• Apple Passbook• The Web• promote their coupons• via visually customizable email and website embed codes• on ad networks, by dynamically creating banner images for each coupon• distribute them via custom, responsive landing pages that had to be optimized for both desktop and mobile delivery• gather detailed, accurate reporting on the performance of those couponsOur first campaign went live just 5 weeks after my start date.

  • Yellowbook Usa
    Architect
    Yellowbook Usa 2007 - Mar 2010
I was brought in to completely rearchitect yellowbook.com. I was given a brand new team, and just 1.5 months to release. I tackled the problem by:- Establishing a culture of learning within the team. I created relevant learning assignments for each developer, who was then responsible for teaching the rest of the team.- Employing Agile methodologies to accurately estimate tasks, and pair programming to ensure code quality, and improve ramp up times- Mandating that all code be checked in with full test coverage.- Creating a custom MVC platform on top of ASP.net (MS MVC had not been released)- Implementing an AOP platform to orthogonally handle the prodigious and dynamic logging requirementsNot only did we meet our time frame, we were able to subsequently turn off half of our production hardware and maintain the same level of performance. Shortly thereafter, I wanted to highlight the growing importance of mobile to the company, and so the team created a mobile web version of Yellowbook.com in just one month (in addition to our other deliverables). This led to being given responsibility to create and maintain iOS and Android apps as well.Still with capacity to spare, we took over the search api, and promptly increased its speed, updated its structure for clarity, improved documentation and customer support, and expanded the metrics it tracked.Later, I felt that the company was missing the growing importance of social, and so we baked Facebook integration in to our ratings and reviews initiative. Today, I’m told that Facebook refers more traffic to Yellowbook than even Google.During my tenure, we never received additional headcount, other than a few remote mobile specialists. We achieved ever higher productivity by writing cleaner code, and employing ever more sophisticated build and testing automation.
