Owner/Operator

Townsville Cbd, Fairfield Waters And North Ward.

In 2012 I moved to Townsville to become a multi-store McDonald's Owner Operator. Whilst I had successfully owned and operated one restaurant in Roma, moving from one restaurant to multiple restaurants did have it's challenges. It is not a case of just replicating what you did as a single store operator. I was very hands on as a single store operator and whilst I had a great management team I took ownership of and considered myself responsible for the day to day running of the restaurant. To become a multi store operator you cannot do that. You need to hand the reigns over to management. You need to instill your values in them, trust them, invest in them, give them a purpose and allow them to grow. Be generous, reward your employees and let them know they are valued. Any business is only as good as its employees. And employees who are happy and take pride in the business they work for are one of your best advertisements. I firmly believe that customers can sense this and it has a very positive influence on your business as a whole.

Owner/Operator

Roma, Queensland, Australia

In 2006 the family moved out to Roma and we became the Owner Operators of the McDonald's Restaurant. I learnt so many important lessons in Roma. And the first lesson was sometimes you have to go where the opportunity takes you. The family didn't really want to move to Roma. We had always lived on the coast and moving bush wasn't something we wanted to do. But we made the sacrifice and it was the best financial decision we ever made. When we first moved to Roma the mining boom had just begun. Staffing the restaurant was near impossible. We battled on for over year but we just couldn't cope. We had to make a change.Sometimes you need to think outside the square. I decided to look overseas for McDonald's managers in the Philippines. I brought 6 families from the Philippines to Roma. It was expensive but one of the best business decisions I have ever made. The staffing problem was solved.Business began to boom. The culture in the restaurant was second to none. I was passionate about my business and made sure the staff were looked after and treated well. In return they too were passionate about the business and always gave their best. Your business is only as good as your employees, lead from the front and treat them well. After 5 very successful years where sales grew from $45,000 to $115,000 per week an opportunity to move to Townsville and become a multi store operator was offered. A buyer for Roma was required. One was eventually found but the offer was not great. It is hard to find a buyer for a multi million dollar business in a remote country town. I really wanted substantially more than was offered but it had always concerned me that the mining boom may end so I accepted. Timing in business is important. Sometimes what seems like a bad deal Isn't always bad when you look at the big picture. The restaurant was sold and 6 months later the mining boom came to an end. Today, 6 years later, McDonald's Roma is worth less than what I sold it for.

Real Estate Agent

Brisbane, Australia

After retiring from Rugby League I entered the Real Estate industry. I had always had an interest in real estate and there were aspects of being a real estate agent that I really loved. The one thing I didn't like was the bad reputation real estate agents have with some members of the general public. I thought it was really unfair. Most of the people I worked with were good people with great ethics. I learnt a lot over my 8 years in the industry. Things like deciding on a method of sale, putting together great marketing campaigns and the art of negotiation were all skills I needed to use on a regular basis. However the most important thing I learned was to build trust with my vendors. To negotiate a successful sale your vendors needed to trust you.The highlight of my real estate career was when the $7,000 First Home Buyers Grant was introduced in the late 90's. I was selling real estate in an area where the average price for a home was under $150,000 but you could buy a home for under $100,000. In the first month of grant being introduced I sold 15 properties. How I wish I had done that today with the current price of property. What a tidy commission cheque that would have been.

First Grade Rugby League Coach

North Beach Rlfc

North Beach, Perth

I was appointed Captain/Coach of North Beach Rugby League Club in Western Australia for a 12 month period in 1998. My role was to improve the football club both on and off the field. Participation at the club had been on the decline and part of my task as head coach was to increase patronage in general.Rugby League in the local Perth competition is an amateur sport. The players worked all day and then had to come to train. Prior to the season starting I asked around and determined that the players had not been enthusiastic enough about turning up all the time as it just wasn't any fun. I understood what they were saying given that they played purely for recreational purposes. So I put the word out that training would be short, sharp and intense but that I was bringing the fun back. The season started and the numbers were good but could have been better. I hadn't flushed all the potential players out yet. We began our year well and were undefeated after the first month. We had been working hard on the training paddock, getting the results and enjoying each others company at the same time. The word soon spread and one by one more players emerged. Soon we had all the lads on board. On game day the crowds were on the improve and the club was packed after the game.North Beach had four grades - Firsts, Reserves, Third and Under 20's. We went on to win the premiership in all 4 grades. It was a very successful year to say the least and encouraging participation was the key. When leading you need to understand those you are in charge of so as to get the absolute best out of them. I certainly believe this was one of the secrets to our success at North Beach in 1998. The same is true in business. Understanding your employees and customers, and adjusting how you treat them accordingly, is a key ingredient to long term success.

Professional Rugby League Player

Perth Reds

Perth, Australia

In 1995 I joined a new club tom the NRL, the Perth Reds. It was the second time I had had the opportunity to play at a new club. And once again it was a most enjoyable experience. You start from nothing and have to build the clubs culture. And the first 12 months were awesome. Unfortunately the "Super League War" broke out in 1996 and as a result the club would be forced to fold at the end of it's third year. On a personal note my first couple of years with Perth were pretty solid. But I would learn a valuable lesson in my third year. A new coach was appointed and I was told in no uncertain terms that I would not be playing first grade. I decided I was going to prove the coach wrong and try to force my way into the team. But ultimately I wasted a year. No matter what I did I was never going to be picked. In hindsight I should have negotiated a release from Perth and moved on to another club. Sometimes in life (and in business) you have to know when its not working and make a change. This is in no way an endorsement of giving up. But sometimes there is no value in persevering when you cannot change the outcome.

Jan 1995 - Dec 1997

Professional Rugby League Player

Hull, United Kingdom

The 12 months I spent in England playing at Hull FC was awesome. I really enjoyed living in the North of England and the people were fantastic. And it was one of the best years I had on the football field in my 10 year career, and I put that down to one thing, our coach Royce Simmons. Royce was an Aussie as well who I had the pleasure of playing against earlier in my career. Royce was a very good player who represented his state and country. He would admit he wasn't the most skillful of players but he had work ethic and determination in spades. This carried on into his coaching career. The guy worked so hard and was so passionate. I found it impossible not to give him my best on the field. I could not have looked him in the face if I didn't.Passion is a very powerful and positive emotion in Rugby League. And it is so important in business as well. It is important that people, whether they be customers or employees, can see that you have passion for what you do. If they do there is an excellent chance that good things will follow.

Jan 1994 - Dec 1994

Professional Rugby League Player

North Sydney Bears

North Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

In 1992 I signed a 2 year contract with the North Sydney Bears. It was an up and down 2 years. In my first year I was appointed First Grade captain after our then captain Tony Rae broke his leg. Although I considered myself a natural leader it was totally unexpected to me as I was new the club and felt there were others who were more qualified but the coach obviously saw something in me. I was captain of the Bears for about 4 months. It was one of the highlights of my career and think I made a real fist of it.In 1993 I started in Reserve Grade and my form wasn't great. I had always been an good attacking player but I was an average defender at best. I decided to re-invent myself and I really worked hard on my defense. I guess all the hard work paid off because almost overnight I became a very solid defender and found myself back in First Grade. I was a noted defender for the rest of my career.Sometimes in business the same applies. Something isn't quite working and we have to make a change and re-invent our business. Given technology and the rate of change in the world today, re-inventing or evolving your business is something most small business owners will have to embrace.

Jan 1992 - Dec 1993

Professional Rugby League Player

Newcastle, Australia

In 1988 I achieved my childhood ambition of playing in the National Rugby League competition. I moved from Brisbane to Newcastle to play with the Newcastle Knights. It was the Knights first year in the NRL. The playing roster was very young and inexperienced. The coaching staff knew that initially we weren't going to be able to match it with the other sides in skills and experience. So they decided to make us as fit and as tough as they could. Our unofficial motto was you might beat us but you are going to pay a physical price and know you have played a game. Our preseason training sessions were brutal. I had never trained so hard and I would never have to train that hard at any other club I played for. I learnt so much about work ethic and mental toughness. And I also learnt so much about the value of teamwork. As I had played rugby league all my life I thought I knew what being part of a team was. But I learnt what it really meant to be part of a team in Newcastle. Yes we were young and inexperienced but we played for each other. Not one of us wanted to let our mate down. We were all heading in the same direction all of the time. As a result the Newcastle Knights really over achieved in the first 3 or 4 years and laid a great platform for those who were to follow. In sport it is so powerful when you have everybody in a team on same page. Later in life when I became a McDonald's Owner/Operator I would instill these same values in my management teams.
