I believe details matter, even if everyone in the intended audience does not clearly notice them. Why? …because details make the experience. John Hench, Disney Imagineering Sr. V.P. conveyed this same viewpoint in one of my favorite Walt Disney stories. Hench talked about Disneyland’s opening and Walt’s desire to use original materials like leather vs. rubber for the undercarriage suspension straps on the Disneyland Stagecoach. In the midst of overrunning costs, Hench disagreed and told Walt: “The people are never going to appreciate all this close-up detail.” Walt turned, firmly planted his finger on John’s chest, and replied, “You’re being a poor communicator! People are okay, don’t you ever forget that. They will respond to it. They will appreciate it.”Admittedly, every event I provide audio-visual production services for is not of a Disney caliber, but this philosophy is always with me. Walt was not trying to be hypercritical, but to create an experience for his guests. Guests may not overtly think about genuine leather straps, but they sure were going to know what a genuine stagecoach ride sounded and felt like. For me, it’s cables neatly hidden, staff in show blacks, drape creating the illusion of a different sized room, lighting color palettes that evoke specific moods. These little details also might seem insignificant, but they matter. They matter because details make experiences, and experiences make up our stories. Stories are the way we share connections.
