Our daughter Erinn Thompson was nationally recruited as a high school student athlete. We visited many of the finest universities and met a lot of great people along the way. At the time, Jeff was the Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at the University of Virginia (UVa). From the beginning, we had a list of criteria so that Erinn could make an informed and educated decision and without question, Jeff made the difference for both Erinn and her parents. It is impossible to capture Jeff’s many qualities in a single LOR. We came to know him as a man of high character and strong values which are very important to us and yet, what impressed us the most was how Jeff managed Erinn during the recruiting process. He was personable, professional, ethical, genuine and relentless. He engaged every member of the coaching staff and did a consistent job of written, verbal and personal communication. No other program recruited Erinn harder and more diligently then Jeff and his efforts were simply unmatched. What makes Jeff unique and sets him apart from all the other people we met in college basketball was revealed later, after he left the UVa program and before Erinn arrived. He encouraged Erinn to attend UVa and he remained available to her as she transitioned from high school to college. It was apparent that Jeff truly cared about Erinn as a person, and not just a basketball player. This was unexpected and reinforced our belief that Jeff was not just a great coach, he is a great person and committed to the kids he worked so hard to recruit.
