Senior Assistant Operations
British Broadcasting Corporation
Beginning at the BBC as a clerk, I moved into Television in 1977. As part of my career progression I was sent to the BBC Engineering Training Department in Evesham for a three year block release course, while continuing my Operational and Engineering experience at Television Centre.I moved to the Videotape department in 1980 and quickly progressed to Recording Operations Supervisor, working on such live events as the marriage of Prince Charles; the marriage of Prince Andrew; the Olympics (Seoul and Los Angeles); Live Aid (for which I was responsible for the planning, supervision and facilitation of the whole London based recording team). My proudest achievements were working with Paul Hamann, grading the seven part series 'The Duty Men' which subsequently won several BAFTA TV awards, and with Gillian Lynne, choreographer of 'A Simple Man' which won the 'Huw Wheldon' award in the same year (1988).At the beginning of 1991 I was asked to rejoin ETD for three months as a seconded lecturer. This was to supervise two concurrent courses; one for new joiners and the other for staff in their final year and about to formally qualify. At the end of the secondment, I was promoted to Senior Assistant, Operations, responsible for both the Technical delivery of programmes to the BBC and the guidance of producers through the post production process. This made me the main point of contact for all programme and transmission related issues. It was also at this time that I decided to completely rewrite the BBC's Technical Delivery Document, as it was by this time, somewhat out of date.In 1995, following an invitation to tender by BBC WorldWide, I was asked to plan and implement a format conversion and dubbing project for a 3year/£6M contract to bring all programme dubbing for BBC WorldWide 'in house'. This project was completed ahead of schedule and within the allocated budget.
