Graduate Assistant (Admissions/Student Services)

West Lafayette, In, Us

I had two separate roles as a graduate assistant; during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years, I worked in the Admissions portion of the office, and during the summer of 2009, I worked in the Student Services portion of the office. As an Admissions graduate assistant, I was responsible for overseeing several programs, most notably the Krannert Ambassadors program. This program was designed to allow for prospective applicants to the Master's programs to have a student point-of-contact. The Ambassadors also participated in Krannert Profile Programs, a "day-on-campus" for prospective applicants, and Krannert Weekend, an event for admitted students - both of which I played an integral role in planning. Also during my time as an Admissions GA, I manned a booth recruiting students for the Master's programs during events at both Purdue and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and maintained an admissions reporting spreadsheet using data from the online application system. As a Student Services graduate assistant, I had two main responsibilities: planning an orientation week for a class of 23 incoming Master's of Science in Finance students, and planning Opportunity Day, an event highlighting academic options and clubs for the class of 175 first-year students. I was responsible for setting up logistics for both of these events as well as being a central point of contact for students, faculty, and others involved.

Design Engineer

Annapolis, Maryland, Us

During my three and a half years with McCrone, I provided engineering consulting services to clients on a variety of civil site design projects, from creation of the concept plan through completion of construction. This consultation included complex engineering design calculations using software packages such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, HydroCAD, and HEC-RAS for the creation of stormwater management facilities, rural roads, utility lines, and sediment & erosion control devices. My design work met the clients’ functional needs (often overcoming significant zoning and/or political obstacles) as well as project budget and timeline requirements. During the design process, I worked within a dynamic team of three to five individuals, often taking responsibility for performance and/or technical training of junior staff. Once designs were completed, I was responsible for maintaining relationships with government reviewers in order to expedite the approval process for these projects. Additionally, I presented technical details as a project advocate in front of local Planning Commissions and state Technical Advisory Committees. Finally, I acted as a liaison between the design firm and contractor during both project construction and as-built survey work completion.Projects included: Anne Arundel Medical Center (Annapolis, MD)Miles Point Subdivision (St. Michaels, MD)Calvert Heights Housing Complex (Chestertown, MD)Willow Branch Subdivisions (Queen Anne's County, MD)Walgreens Store (Chestertown, MD)Chevy Chase Bank Branch (Kent Island, MD)
