I am a molecular and cell biology researcher working in 'omics. One of my continuing goals is to better understand the constraints on transcriptional regulatory networks. Regulatory mechanisms are key to many developmental, disease, and evolutionary processes. Some of my previous research has uncovered: 1) mutationally activated KRAS drives its programming predominantly through the kinase ERK (Klomp et. al 2024a Science, Klomp, Diehl, Klomp et. al. 2024b Science). 2) novel genes driving embryological development (Klomp et. al. 2015 Science, Yoon, Klomp et. al. 2019 eLife), 3) reengagement of a developmental transcriptional program in hypoxic vascular cells (Klomp, et. al. 2020 JBC), and 4) molecular programs of appendage formation (Nakamura, Klomp, et. al. 2015 PNAS, Swenson, Klomp, et. al. 2018 FEVO).I have recently begun an independent research group at Michigan State University in Grand Rapids Michigan. Our focus is to better understand how the kinase ERK controls cell activities as well as the mechanisms that a KRAS-addicted cell uses to overcome inhibition of this pathway, including influences of hypoxic programming. This is an extension of my previous work with the laboratory of Dr. Channing Der at the University of North Carolina to better understand the transcriptional output and post translational consequences of mutationally activated KRAS.
