About Jeff Lindsay

Named by IAM Media as one of the IAM 300 Global Leaders 2023: https://www.iam-media.com/survey/strategy-300-global-leaders/2023/article/jeff-lindsay. I'm an IP strategist, US patent agent, and technology scout. Drafting patents is part of what I do, but I also love developing strategy and pursuing "disruptive" IP to meet their goals.I am also an inventor with over 130 US patents. I have worked on patents for many consumer products such as deodorants, diapers, packaging, chemistry, software (security systems), pulp and paper, biofilm control agents, green energy, etc. Current focus in new product development, technology scouting, and IP creation is on sustainable packaging and improved paper-based products. My IP strategy draws upon my diverse experience as a professor, a researcher, and an innovation consultant for large and small companies. This helps me bridge the large gaps between IP workers, inventors, and management, helping them to see new opportunities in each invention. Previous roles include assistant and associate professor at the Inst. of Paper Science and Tech., now RBI at Georgia Tech), Corporate Patent Strategist and Sr. Research Fellow at Kimberly-Clark, Head of IP at Asia Pulp & Paper (China), Director at Innovationedge, and Head of R&D and IP at Lume Deodorant. Every year since 2015, I was (to my surprise!) recognized as one of the world's top IP strategists with the IAM Strategy 300 award. In China at APP, I led a team of IP professionals to protect brands, formulations, processes, trademarks, designs, and trade secrets. APP has some of the world's most advanced and most sustainable papermaking and plantation technology. I valued the opportunity to strengthen innovation and influence new projects to add further value and make R&D more fruitful. I've described some of my approaches in Conquering Innovation Fatigue (John Wiley & Sons, 2009; http://tinyurl.com/nofatigue). I have experience in running and organizing IP committees, IP recognition programs, managing IP portfolios, technology scouting, and licensing activities. I have also conducted training sessions for corporate groups in creativity, innovation, and decision making. Interests: consumer products, barrier materials, recyclable packaging, paper-based packaging, formulating, biofilms, odor control, natural ingredients, enzymes, lignin, cellulose, supercapacitors, melanin, skin care, odor control, cosmetics, deodorants, laundry detergents, Mandarin Chinese (HSK 5), and IP management.

Listed skills include R&D, Strategy, Product Development, Patents, and 46 others.

Jun 2019 - Aug 2020

Head Of Intellectual Property

Central Jakarta, Special Capital Region Of Jakarta, Id

My team of IP professionals from China and Taiwan works with business units to create and manage IP and strengthen strategy. We help drive innovation, including open innovation, tech scouting, and new business development, and provide hands-on help with targeted IP creation sessions and training. Training has included IP strategy workshops for inventors and management, innovation workshops, creativity training, and an unusual program for innovation and decision making skills for management. As a result of these efforts, numerous new inventors in APP have added new patents to a rapidly growing portfolio, and we have created a foundation for growth in several areas. Markets include Asia and beyond. We have also worked with multiple teams to strengthen our trade secrets approach.

Jun 2011 - May 2019

Director Of Solution Development

Immokalee, Florida, Us

Worked with some of the world's largest and most interesting companies to rapidly drive innovation in targeted areas involving healthcare, personal care, and security. Also worked with many smaller companies, including start-ups, to license their technologies or strengthen their IP and strategy. Results included successful tech scouting and licensing projects with technologies I found that were brought to partners and commercialized internationally. Results also included IP creation, including IP drafting and prosecution, for clients with breakthrough inventions, followed by connecting clients to prospective partners. Technology transfer experience not only included successes in connecting individual companies and inventors to partners, but also included technology transfer work to bring diverse Russian technologies to the U.S. in partnership with ISTC (http://istc.ru). One of the few public disclosures I can share about our tech transfer work is the public notice of a presentation I gave in Moscow listed on the ISTC website: http://www.istc.ru/istc/istc.nsf/va_WebResources/News_Drug_Design&Development/$File/TIReview%28Eng%29.pdf. My visit to Moscow and ISTC was one of the highlights of my first year at Innovationedge.

Aug 2007 - Jun 2011

Corporate Patent Strategist And Senior Research Fellow

Irving, Tx, Us

This corporate role involved guiding K-C's many intellectual property (IA) committees in their systems and strategies, leading by example in identifying and pursuing IP opportunities, helping to build strategic partnerships with outside groups to bring in needed IP for business growth, working with R&D to help them better deal with disruptive innovations, leading efforts in business method patents (including a large RFID estate), driving defensive publications as a key strategic tool, and enhancing K-C's position as a thought leader in IP areas. My K-C career began in R&D, involving research and new product development support for disposable consumer goods such as tissue, towel, feminine care products and absorbent articles like diapers. Providing R&D support for a new tissue technology led to aggressive involvement in patent strategy and eventually to becoming a registered US patent agent and Corporate Patent Strategist at K-C. Key accomplishments include founding a thriving community of practice (the "Intellectual Property Chapter") that brought together R&D, legal, and management to enhance our approach to IP strategy and our IP systems, in addition to providing a platform for networking and mentoring. Also chaired the Research Fellows and Technical Leaders group. Brought several new strategic elements to K-C, including the use of IP to cope with disruptive innovation, creative uses of defensive publications, and the use of business method-related patents. Obtained over 100 patents from my own R&D and IP strategy efforts, and helped numerous other inventors and teams learn and pursue IP opportunities they would have otherwise missed. Energizing R&D personnel and other employees about innovation and IP is a favorite activity.

May 1994 - Aug 2007

Associate Professor & Assistant Professor

Atlanta, Georgia, Us

Faculty member at IPST, conducting research and advising graduate students (Ph.D. and M.Sc. students) in scientific and R&D disciplines related to the paper and forest-products industries. My scientific research focused on fluid mechanics and heat transfer in paper-related systems and porous media. Used gamma densitometry and flash x-ray radiography to explore multiphase flow and heat transfer systems, including high-intensity dewatering of paper and fiber slurry flow. Investigated anistropy for flow behavior in paper systems, displacement dewatering technology, pulp suspension flow, ceramic paper properties, etc. Developed new courses on flow through porous media and on recycling technology. Also taught solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, etc. Received the Olmsted Award for one of my early technical papers on the anisotropic permeability of paper. Received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1992.
