It is a balancing act on LinkedIn to share a career history without tripping the "age" flag. Nonetheless, from age 15 through to age 40, I accepted several challenging roles. 1979-1981: "Weather Kid" for KSBR-FM. Before there was a Weather Channel, I studied the microclimates of Orange County, CA, and broadcast my own predictions daily. This work also changed how NOAA in West Los Angeles forecast weather for the county to its south. I was awarded Meteorologist of the Year in 1981 for my groundbreaking work.1981-1982: One year of college.1982-1983: Wegman's, Rochester, NY. Deli-counter customer service.1983-1985: Lambert's Landscaping, Dallas. Became their residential foreman and introduced specialty care and floral design for our top clients. 1985-1987: Van Herrick's Landscape, Los Angeles. Exterior landscape manager for commercial real estate, introduced "pocket garden designs" and around-the-year blooming landscapes. Doubled sales of add-on color beds in one year. 1988-1991: I returned to college to finish my bachelor's degree and also operated Miller Christmas Co. in Los Angeles, where I introduced non-denominational, seasonal color, lights and decorations for downtown Los Angeles condominium buildings. Received "Best Christmas Display" for Bunker Hill Tower in 1990.1991-1993: Mallscapes, Dallas. Managed Christmas decoration sales for commercial buildings. 1993-1995: Returned to college to earn a master's degree in journalism. During this time, I also worked as a film critic for KGBS and interned as a journalist for the Dallas Business Journal.1995-2004: IBM, Dallas and New York. As an internal communication manager, two great accomplishments stood out. I improved employee engagement from 37% to 76% in one year. Secondly, I saved the company $14 million annually through the mobility PDT, which enabled employees to work "anytime from anywhere," and ensured they had the tools and services to succeed at their job.
