We moved there the previous year for new employment because I had been downsized out of a company I absolutely loved working for in Carlsbad, California. I didn't want to move to the Phoenix area, a.k.a., "The Valley of the Sun." It was more like "The Valley of the Furnace." I find the summer (AND spring AND fall) desert heat horribly inhospitable. And it seems like almost all the vegetation in the desert has an attitude. It loves to poke, scratch, stab, gouge, and sometimes just not let go of you. Suffice it to say, I'm not a desert fan.But a company gave me an offer I couldn't refuse, so we moved. Then one fateful day in the aforementioned November, I was told by my boss I was no longer loved. Here's a severance check. Go away. Well, OK, they didn't use those words exactly, but that's what it felt like. It was a devastating day for me, my career, and my dear family. It hurt, really hurt. It made this grown man even cry. Suffice it to say I deeply regretted leaving our previous So. California paradise and friends.After picking up the pieces of my temporarily shattered career, I began the job search. I attended networking events. One was a group called Executives Network — yes, for those more seasoned job seekers. It was led by the inimitable Molly Wendell. She became attracted to my skill set. After one meeting, she asked me to stay afterward and chat. Instead of trying to help me land a chief communications officer position, and knowing that I previously ran my own PR business, she said, "Why don't you just start your own PR business again? Director Of Corporate CommunicationsIsagenix Jan 2006 - Nov 2007Chandler, ArizonaI was suddenly thrust back into the job search when I was unexpectedly downsized out of Penta Water Oct. 2006. After hunting for a job in So. California, I was one day contacted by my very good friend Rick Despain. Rick, whom I had hired for a marketing position back in 1989 when I worked at the Jefferson Institute in Utah, was now the VP of marketing at network marketing company Isagenix in Chandler, AZ. He said I should visit and interview for a PR role at his company.This was problematic for two reasons:1) I vehemently disagree and despise the multi-level marketing business model. I think it hurts far more people than it helps.2) Arizona. Specifically, the Phoenix area — known as the Valley of the Sun. I'm not a fan of inhospitable desert heat and most brown terrain with plants that poke, stab, slice and dice you just for walking too close.Nonetheless, I caught a flight to Phoenix, met and interviewed with the top executives of the company, and was offered a job. They were so kind to give me that proverbial "offer I couldn't refuse" (especially since I was unemployed and desperately needed a job to continue supporting my family and the 3 of 4 kids still living w/us).Kicked off 2007 with this new job. Communications seemed a bit in disarray, and I worked hard to fix that in all marketing collateral, website copy, and their external newsletter. There really was no need for doing press relations, at least on the national level, because the MLM industry is infused with so much hype. Perhaps a better job title for me would have been MLM hype control. Much of my PR-related focus was on distributor and employee relations. Also provided event support.I met some wonderful people during my nearly two years at Isagenix. Unfortunately, when I called out an executive on an ethical issue one day AND had the support of the company's legal counsel, it still led to me being "right-sized" (pure SPIN) out of the company one day. Public Relations ManagerPenta Water Apr 2004 - Oct 2005Carlsbad, CaliforniaThe story of how I became the first full-time public relations manager hired by Penta Water in Carlsbad, CA was remarkable — at least in my own eyes. Here's how it all happened...I was working in a HIGHLY toxic corporate culture (mostly confined just to my PR dept.), and for the sake of my sanity I had to get out ASAP. I began applying for jobs. I even paid thousands to an executive search firm in Irvine, CA for help. They turned out to be mostly a scam, except for one thing they taught me that made all the money I spent with them worth it. They taught me the importance of having a highly polished personal elevator pitch — one that I needed to have at the tip of my tongue, ready to use to answer the job interview question, "Tell me about yourself."I worked very hard at writing, refining and practicing my elevator pitch.One day I noticed Penta Water, only a few miles away from my current work, posted a PR manager position. I applied. Due to my ability to write a very attention-getting cover letter that practically made me sound like I was hand-crafted by the PR gods just for the job I was targeting, I secured an interview with Penta Water's VP of marketing, Dave Donaldson. (Where are you Dave? Call me!)Very early on in my interview I delivered my elevator pitch to Dave. Afterward, Dave had the most incredulous, blown-away expression I'd ever seen. After a short pause he said, "Come with me." We walked up a long flight of stairs to the COO's office on the second floor. After he introduced me to Ike Gillman, Dave said, "Tell him what you just told me!" I did.The next day I was offered the job, after they rescinded an offer they had already made to another candidate.I had the time of my life at this job. Laid the foundation for their communications. Directed all news media relations, celebrity endorsements, customer relations, and assisted in marketing communications, events and trade shows. Even placed the product on the first season of The Biggest Loser. -
Public RelationsGemological Institute Of America Sep 2001 - Apr 2004Carlsbad, California, United StatesAfter having lived in Utah for nearly a decade, I thought it would be awesome to relocate to So. California. Using my "killer" cover letter to accompany my resume, I begin applying for jobs on Monster.com. In no time I had some interviews and accepted a position in the Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) PR dept.Little did I know what awaited me there.But like all my jobs, I made some really great life-long friends. The challenge resided principally in the three-person PR dept. I had made the mistake of accepting a position far below my skill set, so I had to learn how to make the best of it. I helped with the 10-15 press releases we would churn out monthly for the trade press. We really didn't have that much newsworthy news. It was simply quantity over quality. One trade press magazine editor told me he had grown so tired of this bombardment of press releases that he started automatically throwing them all in the garbage.I also assisted in giving tours. In an effort to secure more meaty projects, I was successful in landing the lead role in creating content for the website revision project. In a department run on distrust, fear and rigidity, it was such a relief to be trusted to head up this project. And it was exciting to see an increase in website traffic after the completion of this project.I'm most grateful to GIA for teaching me patience. This little microcosm of the PR dept. turned out to be a surprisingly highly toxic corporate culture. Life was very challenging for me, but I learned some valuable life lessons that have enhanced my career. It was the impetus for developing a great passion for learning how companies can create a positive corporate culture — one that helps organizations to be more productive and profitable. One that regards the employee as the #1 customer.Suffice it to say that when I drove away from GIA after my last day of work, I played The Primitives song, "Way Behind Me" while I headed off to my new career at Penta Water. -
