I help companies build great Internet technology, especially for user-centric products and educational / non-profit projects.Currently, I'm the CTO at Enveritas, a non-profit that's working to improve the livelihoods of coffee farmers around the world. I lead our engineering, data, and innovations teams in building the systems that collect and analyze data about farmers in a dozen countries, delivering key insights to clients about the social, environmental, and economic issues in their supply chains. I'm always interested in talking with software engineers interested in our mission -- learn more at: https://enveritas.org/jobs/Previously, I was the VP of Engineering at Food52; before that, I managed the backend engineering team for Hillary for America for the first summer of her 2016 Presidential Campaign. The earlier part of my career was in backend engineering for tech startups.

Chief Technology OfficerEnveritas Sep 2017 - PresentNew York, Ny, UsEnveritas is a Y-Combinator-backed non-profit that is working to improve the livelihoods of coffee farmers. We visit farms around the globe to talk with farmers and analyze what we learn to understand patterns around social, environmental, and economic topics. With these insights, we're able to help others understand what programs can help improve the quality of life for the farmers that grow the coffee that we all love to drink. My role is to lead the engineering, data, and innovation/machine learning teams. This involves lots of the usual CTO-at-small-startup responsibilities. Here's a bullet-point list of this, mostly for hitting keywords that we all know LinkedIn wants and loves... :-) • Working with the CEO and COO to provide technical guidance; working with Product to define products, roadmaps, and deliverables • Creating technical strategy — How do we design our core internal platforms for data gathering? How do we track hundreds of millions of data points in a practical way? • Developing hiring and retention strategies, including building a structured interview process and training our teams on how to run interviews • Overseeing architecture and system design for internal systems (we use technologies like AWS ECS Fargate + Docker, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, and Python, all set up with CI/CD pipelines in CircleCI triggered by GitHub commits) • Evaluating vendors and managing implementations, with an eye on security and costs • Occasionally giving talks (O'Reilly's Spotlight on Learning; CodeDriven; Build with Code - New York City) -
Vp Of EngineeringFood52 May 2016 - May 2017New York, Ny, UsLead the team that managed the systems used by Food52's editorial and ecommerce teams, as well as millions of users around the world. During my tenure I oversaw technical migrations (MySQL->PostgreSQL; http->https everywhere; and an AWS migration) as well as engineering management work (OKRs, Hiring, etc.) around team responsibilities and engaging with other stakeholders to prioritize and execute on business needs. -
Director Of Backend EngineeringHillary For America Jun 2015 - Oct 2015Presidential campaigns are unlike any other environment—fast paced, large scale, highly visible, with no institutional history to support the work. I'm proud to have helped my engineers pull off some amazing feats under tight time constraints. While I can't talk about any of the details, I can say hand-wavey stuff about my role: I provided early technical direction to the CTO, helping with early key engineering decisions. I designed the hiring process for backend engineering team and built the team up to a dozen engineers. I contributed to quarterly OKRs and provided engineering guidance to the product team. -
Software Engineer; Director Of Platform EngineeringChill.Com 2010 - 2015Kliner Perkins backed startup acquired by Tinder in 2015. I started in 2010 as a systems engineer / site reliability engineer and promoted into managing the platform in 2012.My responsibilities included writing software and designed systems that managed AWS services (ec2, ELB, s3, etc), including some nifty rapid-deploy systems based on git. My role was to design architecture and guide backend engineers in creating a system that allowed our product engineers to write and ship code as quickly as possible.Key win: building a system that successfully scaled from ~10k users to 20MM users in a weekAutomation, build systems, release management—everything technical that wasn't product was on my plate to solve. Our systems were written in python and we managed services including apache/uwsgi, cassandra/datastax, redis, PostgreSQL, storm, rabbitMQ, kafka, varnish/VCL, and zookeeper. The company was acquired by Tinder in 2015:http://techcrunch.com/2015/01/12/tinder-acquires-ephemeral-messenger-tappy/

Author Of O'Reilly-Published Book, Cooking For GeeksCooking For Geeks (Book) 2009 - 2010(Second Edition: Oct 2015—January 2016)Why do we cook the way we do? How can science help you think about the world around you? Cooking for Geeks (O'Reilly, 2010 & 2015) tackles the science of the kitchen.Writing a book was an amazing experience for me. Even more amazing is how the book was received: - I was featured in USA Today, The Today Show, and on the Food Network, as well as being a guest on NPR and Science Friday multiple times. - Translated into half a dozen languages - The first edition sold well over 100,000 print copies in US English alone; with 20+ print runsIn terms of public speaking and presentation skills, there's nothing quite like looking into a TV camera or sitting in front of a microphone and knowing that millions of people are watching or listening live.
